And we can prove that with the post office.

http://about.usps.com...

Page 15 - Budget Deficit By Year

2009 - 3.7 billion
2010 - 8.5 billion
2011 - 5.0 billion

But JaxsonRaine you moron, you might say(if you are Starcraftzzzz), the Republicans made the Post office pay a bunch of future money to try and shut them down!

Well, go to page 16. Yearly deficit BEFORE PSRHBF

2009 - 1 billion
2010 - 505 million(wow! That was a great year! Only 505 million in losses!)
2011 - 2.8 billion(not so good)

Yes, we love the government. It is very good at bankrupting things. I say we make the government run all utilities, mail, internet providers, grocery stores, airlines, magazine-subscription companies, and restaurants.

Awkward moment when Contra doesn't realize that the free market does this all so much better.

So doesn't that indicate a failure of the Food and Drug administration then if you think that our food is not safe enough?

This would be like me saying "I also want the private sector to regulate the movie rating industries. Have you seen 'this film is not yet rated'. CORRUPT!"

Are you criticizing the government for not turning a profit? State ownership of industries for profit is basically the definition of socialism. The post office used to just be run as a public service like the army, or road maintenance.

The FDA and USDA is being corrupted by special interests which is blocking the role of government by a large degree in these areas.

Don't you think its the nature of government to be corrupted by special interests?

It's an interesting question, but I would frame the discussion a little differently. Government is not "corrupted by" special interests, rather the role of government is to protect the general interest from special interests and establish a body of law to balance the freedoms of various actors within society. So yes, to the extent that government cannot completely extricate itself from the influence of the special interests it was set up to limit, it is in government's nature to be "corrupted" by special interests.

"But wait!" you might say, "Mimshot, you can't balance freedoms, just restrict them." Well, freedoms can, and do, frequently collide. Consider the freedom to dump waste in a river vs. the freedom to drink from a river. We may disagree on who's freedom wins out, but once you decide, you've made a decision. Government is just a name we give to a system of determining who's freedom wins out. Democratic governments means the population gets to decide how to set up the laws to best serve the common interest.
