So recently I've been thinking about alternatives to democracy, and I've been thinking about a system in which the more taxes you pay, you more votes you get. At least to me this would make sense in theory: People who pay taxes act as shareholders of a company, those who pay more get to have more influence (Votes). Would this work in real life? What do you think?

The term for that is a plutocracy.

This is definitely an alternative to democracy, though not a pleasant one to my mind.
One large detraction is that it's a government based on collusion of powers: political and economic power should check each other.

Economic claims have to be balanced against other kinds of claims about what sort of society we should be. If votes become allotted proportional to wealth (even in a less direct Citizens United form), the government becomes a handmaiden to profit-maximization--- and to a heightened degree with each election cycle, as a recursion.

Firms are committed to profit-maximization; an entire society committed to this would be hell on earth.

Sounds like someone supports the Citizens United Case.
