There has been some discussion about the possibility of building a railroad that would connect the US State of Alaska with the rest of the Continental United States. This route would obviously travel through Canada, and would primarily be used for carrying freight, though some have expressed interest in having the railroad carry passengers. What I would like to discuss is whether or not such a railroad for either passengers or freight would yield any economic benefit exceeding the cost to construct it.
