The election is over, Trump is elected. What impact does this have on the economy? There were concerns about DOW Futures, but the industrial average is still up today [http://www.marketwatch.com...].

The only impact here is a knee-jerk reaction due to the political uncertainty of what is going on.
Eventually however, the markets will go back up and stability will return.

It's honestly stupid how much people are panicking over this.

Yep. It's stabilized a little more. They had just so heavily predicted and prepared for a Trump loss it shocked the market.

Why did it shock the market though?

The biggest reason was because the market had fallen into line with the polls and predicted a Clinton win. The market thrives on predicting the future, and any disturbances send it reeling. The magnitude of this, the election of a president with entirely different views than the predicted elect caused a big shock. The US is arguably the biggest, most involved economy in the world, so it was a big deal. His anti-trade rhetoric, specifically, is what brought the most concern to the market. It would have happened the other way if Trump was the predicted winner and then lost. It's just a matter of disrupting normalcy and seemingly solid predictions.
