OU is apparently hosting Krugman on the 22nd. There's an informal discussion at 5, then a dinner and lecture at 6. I have reservations to attend, because I thought it would be interesting, and I was wondering if there were any questions y'all wanted me to ask.:

Yeah, can you ask him why he still insists on believing his failed economic theories?

Another one: Ask him to explain this policy recommendation:

Paul Krugman wrote:
To fight this recession the Fed needs more than a snapback; it needs soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. And to do that, as Paul McCulley of Pimco put it, Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble.

If you seriously ask that question you will be my favorite person.

Yeah, I know the actual answer to that question, I just think asking it in public would embarrass him.

I still fail to understand why Paul Krugman should be embarrassed that a group of people refuse to give to charity unless it advances their ideology.

Or it could harm it, if Paul Krugman wins the debate. I actually don't care who wins, I just think the debate would be interesting.

My Thanks to Paul Krugman
Posted by Thomas DiLorenzo on February 11, 2011 05:20 PM

The junior high schoolish smart aleck Paul Krugman, who writes a column for the New York Times (Don't bother reading them — here's the general theme: Democrats good, Republicans bad) mentioned my book, Lincoln Unmasked, in today's column. Consequently, my Amazon.com sales ranking went from the 80,000 range to 4,929 a few minutes ago. Thanks, Paul! As a fringe benefit my other book, The Real Lincoln, which was published nine years ago, went all the way to 3,966. Thanks again, Krug! I'll use the extra royalty money to up my pledge for Robert Murphy's challenge to Krugman for a debate over Austrian Business Cycle Theory.

Okay, so the dinner/meeting is tomorrow, and, so far, I think I'm going to ask him about:

- the suggestion of creating a housing bubble
- the debate challenge by Bob Murphy (wish I could record it)
- his stance on the whole "unions" business
- Food prices and climate
- that "eating the seed corn" thing from his 13FEB column

Anything else?

I think that's about all you'd be able to ask him, if you can even get that much in. Remember to have his exact words for the first one--he can just spin or deny it if you don't (http://blog.mises.org...).

Unless you get a few friends to come with you, and you each do one question, so when he refuses to call on you a 2nd time after asking stuff like the above, you can still get the questions in.

If you're going to argue with him about an economic matter, you should read what he's written on it before. His arguments are wrong, but he can be very clever in the way he words things--in a real-life setting, it could be difficult to immediately recognize why he's wrong.

http://krugman-in-wonderland.blogspot.com... is a good source for why Krugman's posts are wrong.

I'd narrow it down to one question, I doubt he'll call on you multiple times, especially if the first question is somewhat confrontational.

Ask him about his thoughts on the current direction of New Trade Theory.

You know, something interesting. He's an interesting guy when he's talking about the stuff he actually specializes in.

Well, the conference/dinner starts in about an hour and twenty minutes. This should be interesting. I've been doing a lot of research over the housing bubble thing (which will probably be the focal point of my dialogue with him), and it was apparently a lot more contentious an issue than I gave it credit for.

So how'd it go?
It is odd when one's capacity for compassion is measured not in what he is willing to do by his own time, effort, and property, but what he will force others to do with their own property instead.
