Sorry guys, day two of school and I already have a question

The question deals with absolute values.
|y+9|=21
I subtracted 9 from 21 and got 12, so that would make y=12.
But since its in abolute value brackets, I have to assume that y can also be negative, so does that mean that y also equals -12? I'm pretty sure I write y=12 or -12.

And secondly, in the equation |8w-56|=72, does -56 become positive because it is an absolute value?

Its been a decade since I've done this type of mathematics so I'm going to approach it with logic rather than mathematical technique.

Plug in your answer to the original equation. Do the answers -12 and +12 yield the correct response?

No, -30 gives me the negative y scenario.

That's correct. Note, you're not looking for the negative or positive y scenario. You're looking for negative or positive y + 9 scenario.

Essentially, when you do absolute values, you break it into two equations.

|y+9| = 21

Split to:

y+9 = 21
y+9 = -21

That will give you the two values you need. Familiarize yourself with the logic around it and apply it to the next HW question. Good luck!

Thanks! That makes it much easier.
