What do you think?
It is odd when one's capacity for compassion is measured not in what he is willing to do by his own time, effort, and property, but what he will force others to do with their own property instead.

"The union said I should be educated."
Union leader: "So just teach for a week!"
"The crowd liked the idea of me teaching for a week."
Union: "Teach, John, teach! Teach, John, teach!"
"I think I surprised them again when I said, 'Okay, I'll teach!', but then they changed their mind."

Teacher's unions try to stop the firing of bad or abusive teachers in an efficient manner, and oppose merit-based pay, depriving the education industry of the competitiveness it needs to prosper. Some areas do have charter schools that greatly outstrip the competing public schools, so that everyone wants to go to the charter schools, but spaces are limited, so more charter schools should be built. The internet can also be used to bring students to the best teachers of the world, so that teachers can spend more time tutoring kids one-on-one.

There's a lot of problems with the idea of merit based pay. http://www.debate.org...

To state that merit pay is perfect is to commit the utopian fallacy. What's important isn't whether it is perfect, but whether the results are better then the current system, seniority.
