What do the terms 'progressive' and 'secular humanist' mean?

I've seen the terms more and more. I've checked google, but the results just confused me more.

You are a Progressive-- that is, you see the vast expansion of the state as the way to a better future. Not functionally much different from saying one is a "democratic socialist," except it sounds cooler. The reason the term is used is to snidely imply that opponents are remnants of some kind of barbaric past, without having to bother arguing for it

"Secular humanism" is variably either a broad term for the position that earth and reason matter and the supernatural does not, or a very vaguely defined subset of philosophies that embrace this, plus an essentially altruist ethics and collectivist politics.
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.

Hai guys.

I'm a secular humanist.

Religion is for stupidheads.

Capitalism and selfishness are evil, naughty Ragnar.

(That about clarify it)?

I suppose social progressives want to extinguish certain activities from society... but that would make them conservative or statist...
Umm, seeing as they support government redefining the religious marriage doctrine, I suppose that they want to ban some vile practices of society and destroy some societal ethical standards along the way. It is a confounding and contradicting position, to say the least.
in the blink of an eye you finally see the light

I hope you're joking. Half way point between is moderate. Libertarian is far from either Conservative or Liberal, more like anarchism.

I am kidding yes, though you can consider libertarian slightly in the middle. They take the social freedom that liberals (real social liberals, not social democrats) espouse, and take the economic laissez-faire that conservatives espouse. This is of course in the modern contexts of the terms, by the way.

But yes, I was obviously kidding.

That's the problem with one-dimensional scales. They mislead you about what moderate means.

On a related note, the Libertarian Party would probably like to hire your services in making them look moderate.

I'll rebrand them Republicans.

No.

They wanted you to rebrand them as the centrist alternative to both nutty parties.

And now they know you can't.

PoeJoe:

"Progressivism is a political and social term that refers to ideologies and movements favoring or advocating progress, changes, improvement, or reform, as opposed to wishing to maintain things as they are."

That's what I was referring to when I said socially progressive, Ragnar, and why in the past I have not hesitated to define my views as such. However, it's also a political party (well, it was, created by Teddy Roosevelt after he lost the Republican nomination in 1912 to Taft) with many views resembling liberalism. Progressives are usually Pro Labor Unions / government ownership of public utilities, and typically appeal to intellectuals, minorities, and sometimes communists. In fact, communist support is what diminished the party's prestige (although they maintained that they can and should accept support from anyone).

Ah, secular humanists : )

We believe it is important to exclude religion from morality. We don't necessarily believe in a deity, life after death, or god as being a reason for anything (including telling us what is evil or wrong). Instead, we look to science for answers.

The trouble is, Lwerd, the word is used that way approximately 1 out of 9001 times it is used. So, I don't suggest ever using it without a qualifier lol.
