This is a good debate on the issue -

I'm personally for school uniforms. They have an equalising aspect to them, and promote a certain degree of discipline and the like. We have uniforms for cops and the like, yet I don't see the whole "impinging on the officers' rights" idea come up. School uniforms are also particularly useful given that many government schemes (at least in Australia where we have uniforms) are made much more efficient by being able to identify people as school students.
