I wouldn't take the book to heart. Debating style here is fairly informal and variable per debater. It deals with public speaking, and probably LD insofar as that

Debate textbooks, or public speaking text books for that matter, tend to be about as useful as a lead kite. I say just jump into it, because with debate, practice really does make perfect. :) I didn't become a really decent debater until I started coaching it.
