I know a professor of philosophy who does not know how to engage in conversation in the sense that Oakeshott describes conversation. Rather, his discourse is completely argumentative. And he is quite cynical and sarcastic. I also noticed that he is a poor listener. While he appears to be listening to the other speaker, he really is formulating what he is going to say next. I was at a dinner party with him and he really spoiled the evening.

I bring this up here to emphasize that argumentation has its proper time and place.

Comments anyone.
