FAFSA Dependency Override

Apparently, because my parents were abusive and then kicked me out and there's no more contact with them and now I can't get their tax info for the FAFSA, my financial aid adviser said I can do what's called a Dependency Override or something. Basically, they'll just decide that I'm an independent student and I'll only provide my own info. Anyone have any experience with this?

I have no experience, but the process is described in this handbook: http://www.fsa4counselors.ed.gov...

It looks to me that the way to approach it is through the Financial Aid Administer at the college. The Administrator is supposed to guide you through the process.

Thank you, that was very helpful. :)
