For one, there are studies that people treat girls differently than boys, based on stereotypes. What kind of stereotypes? It could be anything, but let's focus on the ones that probably affect students' attitudes about college. "Boys don't listen or pay attention," "Girls are smarter than boys," "Boys are more concerned about food and sex than about school." Throw in prophecy of self-fulfillment and the number of men going to college will decrease.
