Who else was thought this terrible rule in school? Not only has this multiple notorious exceptions, but it's rarely right.

even if its not entirely accurate, its more helpful than "i before e except when e comes before i". lol

also it can help you remember how to spell by categorizing words in your head as either embodiments of or exceptions to the rule.
evidently i only come to ddo to avoid doing homework...

It is not a rule. It's a mnemonic device used to aid the human brain spell some words in the English language. I don't think of it when I'm spelling words. So I think it's a failed technique.
