A South African region now offers a scholarship for girls who maintain their virginity [http://www.bbc.com...]? Thoughts?

Is it fair or healthy to making scholarship money contingent on not having sex? Is this scholarship sexist, since only girls can qualify for something like this?

Scholarships are becoming more and more stupid... People are being paid for absolutely idiotic reasons.. Many scholarships seem to be set up in a style that promotes people to attend University who, at least in my opinion, should not be there, though many others do serve a good purpose.. The focus often seems to be on female minorities. Now, I have no problem with female minorities attending University, however, why should they receive a scholarship for being born as a female member of a minority? A scholarship depending on effort would be something I would support, but then once again society sort of sets the standard to support certain groups of people.

As an example, having attended a Chinese new year meeting with my father yesterday, who is a scientist, I met one of his colleagues, who has been recently awarded quite a few grants and rewards, while she is by all means a great scientist, mainly because she is female.

In fact, I am not eligible for any scholarship at my University. Not that I really care, but I simply see money wasted on useless things. The same thing with the majority of charity, at least in my opinion, which is exactly why I do not support the majority of them..

I would agree this is sexist. But this is Africa, standards of equality are surely not the same as they are in the US or Europe. I don't know how they can validate virginity without getting MD personal.

Well, abstinence should be encouraged, because it is truism that it is best for your health. But I don't agree with they how they are encouraging it (scholarships), and even if it were fine. How would they check...

Maybe even good population control policy lol

Eh.

Abstinence is a good thing. Definitely notbfpr everybody, but it prevents STDs and unwanted pregnancies as well as makingvsure people have a life directed by themselves as opposed to circumstance. I'll be open about my premarital sex to my children but explain to them the dangers of it, and the benefits of waiting. I assume as compassionate as you are, you'll also want your children to wait until mArriage.

As usual, if it's a government subsidy, I'm opposed to it, if it is from the private sactor or a religious organization, it has my full support

It's the most effective way to prevent STIs and unintended pregnancy. It's also the least fun, but I guess that's subjective. Anyway, having a scholarship based on it is entirely silly. How would they ever know?

Well, yes, it is. But condoms and birth control as about 99% effect. But, abstinence isn't as fun.

Well you worded it too weird, even if I reworded it I couldn't think of a way that would make it "flow". It's all about the vibe, and it wasn't there
