w00t. As a bassist, I should have remembered to create this thread after the guitarist one was made. xD

1. Cliff Burton (Metallica)
2. Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)
3. Rex Brown (Pantera)
4. Lemmy (Motorhead)
5. Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy)
6. Justin Chancellor (Tool)
7. Ian Hill (Judas Priest)
8. Mike Starr (Alice in Chains)
9. John Campbell (Lamb of God)
10. Tom Araya (Slayer)

Cliff Burton is definitely my number one. But after that, they aren't in order of "best --> worst" or anything like that. They're all equal in my mind since they're my influences when I play.
I'm not back. This idiot just upset me which made me stop lurking.

I don't even want to think about a drum thread. There's no way I can come to a decision that I won't obsess about.

Haha, I buy albums just to hear the bass so I know the bassists I like the most. My list is an accurate portrayal of who I obsess over. Cliff Burton is my fvcking HERO.

I'm not really qualified to make Top 10 Bassists list, but Jack Bruce, Geezer Butler, and John Paul Jones are pretty sick.

No particular order (except James Jamerson is probably number 1)

James Jamerson - "I was made to love her" is probably the coolest bass line of all time

Marcus Miller - best slapper, great composer too

Stanley Clarke - he is stanley clarke after all

Geddy Lee
Justin Chancellor
Tim Commerford
John Paul Jones
Les Claypool
Paul McCartney - thank him if you have ever heard melodic bass line you liked

Rounding out the list... I don't know, George Porter Jr probably.

Cliff Burton is hugely overrated. Sorry. He might even be the most overrated musician off all time.

And I guess I should not that the list above is my favorite bassist. If I made a list of best the only ones from that list that would probably be on it would be James Jamerson, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, and Geddy Lee.

Best would also have to include:
Victor Wooten
Adam Nitti
Jeff Berlin (check out his tears in heaven solo, amazing)
Steve Bailey
Stu Hamm
Oteil Burbridge

But most of those guys are mainly solo bassist who have cool solos but I can't listen to their stuff for extended periods.

I can't believe I forgot about Rocco... haven't listened to ToP in a while. Bump someone off my top 10 list and add him.
