A friend of mine (no not you somejohn) is a realy big fan of anime and manga. Now he is considered a big geek despite having a hot girlfriend, this is becuase while not so much in America, being a fan of anime or manga in England is a big no no, But me being more receptive, I have enjoyed a few films or two with him, one being a deamon/porn/super violence and rape with tenticles and such (the names realy long and I forgot how to spell it) the others I enjoyed allot more (though I did enjoy the first one) the others were these ones

Spirrigun (or something like that)
The legend of princess mononoke (as above)
And both Ghost in the shell movies

I felt intrigued by these good films so I watched the Gost in the shell series (both of them) and I fell in love with them, Im currently downloading solid state complex.

Because my friend is now in australia and I cant contact him, and there is no way I can talk to my other friends about it (for fear of becomming an instant social outcast) So I ask the DDO community. What series or movie should I watch next? Any advice would help.

But just to let you know, I saw narruto was realy popular so I gave that a try....I switched to my favourite porn video about a minute into that, so no crap like narruto or pokemon please.

Cheers!

First, what not to watch: (If someone says otherwise ignore them.

Naruto
Bleach
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Avatar
Death Note
One Piece
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Code Geass
Ouran High School Host Club

Do not waste your time with those. Don't do it.

What to watch:

Movies:
5 Centimeters Per Second
Spirited Away
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Place Promised in Our Early Days
Voices of a Distant Star
Interstella5555 - The 5tory of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (Sort of Anime, AWESOME nonetheless)

Series:
Spice and Wolf
Welcome to the NHK
Cowboy Bebop
Kaiba
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Planetes
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei
Kannagi
Kino's Journey
Toradora
School Days
To Aru Majutsu no Index

Those a listed in the order in which I enjoyed them. I enjoyed all of them, but your tastes may differ. Just don't watch what's on the 'do not watch' list.

Always watch shows in Japanese with English subtitles (Cowboy Bebop is the only exception to that rule).

Add Strike Witches to that list if girls with no pants in a post WWII world with flying machines on their legs fighting an alien invasion appeals to you. It did to me.

How exactly you link Death Note in with those I have no idea.

Course, since OP likes Ghost in the Shell, my tastes are probably a long way off. So I'd recommend Gundam, which I disliked just as much as Ghost in the Shell for pretty much the same reasons :)

I think the book shogun by james clavell would make a great anime film. Anybody else read his book?

Bleach
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Death Note
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Ouran High School Host Club

Nah, just don't waste your time with these. Having actually seen a good portion of these series which john is listing, I'd consider myself a good judge on the matter. Bleach starts off poorly, is briefly good in the second story arch, but then turns into a DBZ clone.. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a bit pseudo intellectual. Death Note is only good up until Light purposely loses his memory (then it just starts to get in plain stupid after that). Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? The name should speak for itself. As for Ouran High School, I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's really lame. I have no idea what john's problem is with the others, although I'd recommend you steer clear of their animes and stick to their mangas. Animes in general are crap; stick to the source material 9/10. Code Geass is an exception, although I will say that it goes downhill in it's second season (though not enough to be considered garbage, as is the case with death note).

Alright, I've compiled an all-inclusive list of the anime I watch. Here it is:

==== Begin list

==== End list

I suggest you adopt this same list.

You've asked me that before. I know you have. And expressed the same feeling about it.

Well, first of all it's a wannabe cyberpunk, except the protagonists are cops. The protagonists of cyberpunk, or anything punk, should never, ever, ever be cops, especially elite cops, or the world just loses all believability-- Good guys running everything =/= dystopia, it just doesn't work, there's gotta be a villain somewhere actually running the damn joint, and completely unsympathetic protagonists are a problem all their own. The closest you could get in cyberpunk to any characters resembling authority without screwing would maybe be an independent mercenary unit, like in Fullmetal Panic (which I highly recommend, even if the type of action doesn't suit your taste it's frigging hilarious-- it's not a cyberpunk setting, but it's not too far off).

Second, I just don't find much interesting in it, the plot just couldn't carry me past two episodes or so.

Course, the second part could be because as a genre, I can't stand police dramas in general. I can stand police in dramas, e.g., Death Note, but it can't fit the same old formula.

Genre is important. You have to find something you like.

Most of the shows I watch are like high school romance dramas with a magical girl sprinkled in every once and again. I don't really like action shows with the exception of Strike Witches (but they don't try to be serious, it's flying lolis with no pants).

Many of the shows and movies I listed will at one point make you shed manly tears, they did for me anyway. Just last night I shed manly tears watching episode 16 of Toradora. 5 Centimeters Per Second will have you bawwwing like a baby.

Rumour has it, thats theres going to be a live action film adaptation of ghost in the shell....Im not sure wether this will be a good or a bad thing.

but apparantly steven speilberg is involved somehow, which could be a good thing.

But ive been looking about, and Avi Arad is said to be one of the producers, now people familiar with him will know that he has produced films for Marvel comics, which could...be a good thing, but he also produced bratz, the movie. Which is definetly not a good thing.

Have you tried the Fullmetal Alchemist series?
(Although I thought the manga was MUCH better.)

This was fun I watched anime manga too. I love it how they can make all those vivid characters come to life and some even has certain doctrine that is quite thought-provoking. Here's the one I have finished watching and is my favorite.
Cowboy Bebop
Bleach
One Piece
Full Metal Alchemist -- (I love this)
Full Metal Panic
And one where the plot is more on the dogma of religion I forgot the title.

Trinity Blood, maybe? Most of that series was awesome. Some episodes not so much. But most of it.
