I've only watched about ten of those movies, and heard of about fifty of them xp, but it seems on point.

Hmmm.
Many things in this list surprised me
1. Shawshank? Really? But now that i look at it again is was pretty good.
2. Dark knight was not THAT great.
3.Star wars V? That has to be the worst one of the entire series.
4.Seven Samurai? Holy cow. One that did deserve to be up there.
5.City of God-another good underrated movie.

I'm happy to see Dr. Strangelove and Apocalypse now on there. They should definitely be higher than the dark knight...

I didn't hate it, but I really didn't like the character's diction. The Joker and Harvey were the only 2 people I could understand consistently. I missed half of what everyone else said. I might have understood 20% of what batman was saying. This made it pretty hard to follow the storyline.

Also, I did really like Inception (though it takes several watched to really understand everything) but I don't think it should be above the Matrix.

The matrix 1 was...ok.
Matrix 2 and 3 were horrible. As in, I would break those DVDs.

I've seen Apocalypse Now, but not Dr. Stranglelove (it's on my very, very long 'To watch list') but that's irrelevant.
The facepalm was because this list is a directly reflection of popularity. It's a top 250 list as voted by users. If you want a 'quality' list, go and look at Rotten Tomatoes.

Not that quality trumps entertainment value.

I, for one, am a Batman freak. I've watched Burtons Batman and The Dark Knight more times than I care to admit. For it's time Batman was f-ing brilliant, but 20 years is a long time in film and The Dark Knight was simply better in every way. I'll debate anyone at any time on this.

1. Go to your list.
2. Move Dr. Strangelove to the #1 spot.
3. Yes now.
4. No you can't do it later.
5. Stop whining.
6. Because I told you so.
7. No, that movie is less important.
8. Stop arguing and go.

Sigh... I can never watch a movie like Dr Strangelove. I am a child born in the era of CGI, and have been spoiled by aesthetics. Black and white movies tend to irritate me.

12 Angry Men is my favorite black and white movie. That definitely deserves to be up there.

There are a lot of really good old movies that are far superior to so many of those on the list. To Kill a Mockingbird was great, so was Citizen Kane, Moby Dick, Patten, The Miracle Worker, there are tons that are really great movies that are just sort of forgotten.

It's a good list. I've seen about two-thirds of them, a product of being old rather than being an avid movie viewer.

Some of the more recent films seem overrated, probably because more of the raters have seen them. For example, Toy Story 3 makes the list while Fantasia does not.

I think comedy is not taken seriously enough, as it were. I'd put Duck Soup, Young Frankenstein, L.A. Story, and A Christmas Story on my list, maybe even Kung Fu Hustle -- though there is no accounting for taste. Everyone must see Dr. Strangelove, of course.

After going through the thread, I can only conclude that the people who posted have not watched many movies.

The Top 250 is a highly contested, debated and controversial topic among movie buffs. Most of them tend to dismiss it as a popularity contest, but no one can deny that it's a very good starting place for people just starting out in the journey of movie watching.

You can discover so many good movies, directors, cinema from across the world, that it's just silly to dismiss this list.

Of course, everybody has their own lists, but this list is pretty important.

-----

As an aside, I read here that someone thinks Star Wars V is the worst of the lot. I truly pity that person.

Also, someone was just flippantly casual about Return of the King. It's just opinions like these, which they are obviously entitled to, that make one feel sad.

I'd just wish they would put in a little more effort into getting the cultural relevance, the past history and movie making in general, so that they could have an enriching and sublime experience.

For, I assure you, nothing does it better than movies. It's the amalgamation of all art forms and nothing comes quite close to it.
You will say that I don't really know you
And it will be true.
