I say it's "Notorious Thugs." My criteria would simply be "quality," as opposed to originality, sales/popularity, etc.

Well, it's pretty hard to narrow it down to one. I mean, you have a song like this -- http://grooveshark.com... -- which is excellent, but I would necessarily say it's' better than http://grooveshark.com... , which I'd say is also one of the best rap songs I've ever heard.

But, then, what about http://grooveshark.com... or http://grooveshark.com... ? Those songs deserve just as much recognition.

Could go on forever. ^_^

I wouldn't say any song is the best ever, cause there's plenty of good ones out there with their own style. But heres some that have transcended time and the changing of preference, for me:

Nas & Lauren Hill - If I Ruled the World

Cunninlynguists - Lynguistics

Immortal Technique - Dance with the Devil

Atmoshpere - Trying to Find a Balance

Lose Yourself immediately comes to mind. It's not my favourite rap song, or even my favourite Eminem song, but in terms of beat, lyrical complexity and delivery it's unmatched by pretty much anything else I've ever heard. I loved 8 Mile.

I'd never heard the first or third ones before. They both have a nice, smooth beat which i really love. She said has such a soulful groove to it, I like. Eyedea & alibies is great. (but slug is better hehe) I used one mic for my "best meaningful rap songs" debate :P

Nope, it's HandleBars.

Sorry, not a fan. Not at all. Sounds like a weak-a55 Eminem rip-off to me, but I realize that to others it's probably good. For some reason.

I'm actually not familiar with most of the other songs presented, I'll have to have a listen through when I get some time.

First off, it's "Best rap song ever?" not "Best ever rap song?". Okay, now that thats out of the way...

Pretty much anything by N.W.A. No such thing as a bad N.W.A. song.

Eminem belongs nowhere near Biggie!

Blah blah. Rap fan boys begone. I love Notorious, but Eminem is better.

@ tvellalott -- Infinite is my favorite Eminem song, but Lose Yourself is a very close second.

@ Lasagna -- My favorite Biggie song is Everyday Struggle. Notorious Thugs is great, but I'm not the biggest fan of BT&H.

I love the song Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill. It's not the best, but it's definitely up there. Also, I'm surprised that nobody on DDO ever mentions one of my favorites - Aesop Rock. I know Geo claims to like underground hip-hop (I forgot who his fave underground artist is...) but AR is definitely one of the best IMO.

Also, Eminem is definitely on par with Biggie (though Biggie is for sure my FAVORITE). Eminem is underrated not by pop culture, but by people who claim to love hip-hop - either because he's alive and/or white. Plain and simple.

Eminem isn't as good because he didn't die before he came off his peak.

Now he makes garbage teaming up with the likes of Aahliya or whatever thefuck her name is and when I hear a new song by him I can't wait to turn the dial. If Eminem got shot to death after his third album, he would be a top 5 all-timer.

To me it's hard to pick a single cut, but all three of his first albums are just chock full of talent. They are just one big work of art to me, unlike other artists (admittedly, Biggie included) who have albums with good cuts and bad ones.

I'm not a big Bone fan either... Look at it this way. Biggie invited Bone on the track, and then assimilated their style - and defeated them with their own methods. It showed that he could excel at more than is "remarkable" slow flow, which is why I think it was such a great song (together with a great beat and lyrics). Bone held their own, but who pays attention to the last half of the track anyway :P

What a horrible thought! If that had happened, he wouldn't have released Recovery and Hell: The Sequel, both GREAT albums.
I suppose he'd be even more legendary though...

Also, I quite liked "Love the Way You Lie" :P
Maybe *gasp* I'm the fanboy?

I am heavily biased against Rihanna because I just hate her. I also don't think Eminem's lyrics are half as good as what was produced under Dre. His flows seem redundant and tired... Like he's just cashing in on the fame without the necessity of actually being great anymore.

I disagree. His wordplay, in-rhymes, multis and metaphors are as good as ever.
