I have it, and it's pretty good. There's plenty of content and the story is pretty well put together. Although unless you fly through the game, most of it is going to be pretty easy even on the hardest difficulty. I'd recommend not making any of your own gear because it really makes you too good. When I respecced my guy to make armor (you can respec any time if you pay money) the game instantly became easymode.

The combat system is what makes this game, best action RPG I've played, although the very end of the game is a bit lacking.

Yeah, I played the demo, and it seemed really cool. The ability to easily switch between weapons and "classes" seemed really awesome to me.

Yep. I don't understand why. The combat was extremely fun imo and the world was pretty huge, plus they were releasing DLC about every month or two, so they were obviously committed to it.

Too committed. The game sank the whole studio.

Not really. By most new IPs standards it sold quite well (over 300,000 units is US), however, it didn't sell well enough to recoup the very large amount spent on developing it.
More to the point, the game is great fun. It doesn't meet the very high bar set by Skyrim, but highly enjoyable in its own right.

One obvious issue I bet they had was competing with Skyrim.

I almost always hear people compare it side-by-side with Skyrim and say how Skyrim did a better job and whatnot, but it's really not that similar. It's a somewhat linear third-person action game, whereas Skyrim is an open-ended first-person RPG. The combat in Amalur is probably it's main thing, but the combat in Skyrim... doesn't really compare.

I know, their not similar at all, but its still and RPG, and it still had to compete with a huge name like The Elder Scrolls.

I mean, I'm not a big fan of comparing Halo and CoD, but it still happens.
