My debate class is being introduces to the many forms of debating and to help with that my teacher and I are trying to find some movies that include debating or great speeches. If anyone knows any movies besides The Great Debaters and could list them it would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I second that. I enjoyed the Great Debaters but surely there's better ones out there.
"Let me tell you the truth. The truth is, 'what is'. And 'what should be' is a fantasy, a terrible terrible lie that someone gave to the people long ago. The 'what should be' never did exist, but people keep trying to live up to it. There is no 'what should be,' there is only what is." - Lenny Bruce

"Satan goes to church, did you know that?" - Godsands

"And Genisis 1 does match modern science... you just have to try really hard." - GR33K FR33K5

I thought The Great Debaters was overrated, but it was all right.

Off the top of my head...

Debate (major motion pictures) (...but there are documentaries you can order):
*The Paper Chase
*Expelled
*(I'd say a Michael Moore movie, but he doesn't let the other side converse - Maybe "Roger & Me"?)
*Election (haven't seen in a while, but it's good; check to see if debate's in there)

Speeches:
*Henry V (St. Crispin's Day; you'll want to buy the soundtrack after watching the scene)
*Network (mad as hell...)
*Pride of the Yankees (Lou Gehrig)
*Braveheart
*To Kill a Mockingbird
*Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
*A League of Their Own (No crying in baseball)
*Wall Street (Greed is good)
*The Shawshank Redemption (Red's final parole hearing)
*The Queen (when she makes her TV address to the nation post-Diana's death)

I'm forgetting a bunch, so here's a good web site:
http://www.americanrhetoric.com...

Good luck!

That's just a victim mentality race movie. I wanted to watch it for debates, but hey, what did I find? Anyways, if you're into those, there's a few good speech sections in The Freedom Writers too.

What?

Just in case I get into some BS with FREEDO again about how he's NOT a narcissist.

"The law is there to destroy evil under the constitutional government."
So... what's there to destroy evil inside of and above the constitutional government?

If you want to find the best Obama speech, check the 2004 DNC convention, not anything since.

Other good political speeches (American, at least):

*JFK inaugural

*Lincoln's second inaugural

*FDR "a date which will live in infamy"

*Eisenhower address to armed forces the night before D-Day invasion

*Richard Nixon "I am not a crook. I've earned everything I've got." (good to follow up with resignation speech)

*Ronald Reagan "Mr. Gorbechev (sp?), tear down this wall."
--> Also, speech after the crash of the Challenger

*Bill Clinton "I did not have sexual relations with that woman..." (good to follow up with) "Indeed I did have sexual relations with Miss Lewinsky, and it was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong."

*George W. Bush, 9/11/01 address to nation

Best speeches from 2008 conventions:
RNC: Sarah Palin's (though ironic, in hindsight)
DNC: Not Obama's, but Brian Schweitzer's (Gov. of Montana)

Yeah, I don't think it would take much effort for just about anyone here to beat the "great debaters" in a debate.

"There's no crying in baseball" is HARDLY a speech.

Sure it is; it could fit right into a prose/poetry compilation, too.

And "The Shawshank Redemption" isn't overrated, just overplayed on TNT.
