Many songs are straightforward, usually about a guy/girl. There are always those odd ones that, while it's good without the interpretation, you form an idea of what it metaphorically means. The song that currently has me is 'Emerald' by Thin Lizzy.

I see it as a metaphor for the British conquest of Ireland. The Emerald is referring to Ireland, the soldiers being Cromwell's troops. Thoughts , or am I just looking into it too deep?

I don't think you're reading too deep into the song, because I can certainly see how you can correlate the song to the British conquest of Ireland. Definitely.

But, what does it matter whether or not that is what it actually means? Many songs have different ways you can interpret it; whatever you believe it means is how that song relates to you, and just because the actually author may have meant it in a different way, doesn't mean your meaning is any less a meaning.

That is true. Music has an original meaning, and theme, but many people interpret it differently. Though they're usually within one bubble of though (e.g. An anti-war song is an anti-war song)

Fix'd.

Agreed. Usually the variations aren't too great; a love song is still a love song, but instead of applying it to your romantic relationships, you can apply it to others.

It's stealing if I literally took it from someone's post, where it no longer existed, and put it here. I'm simply............using other people's ideas :).

Kind of like how Christians use the ideas of pagans.

Am I right or am I right?

Essentially, but they did away with all the unnecessary God, made a one-for-all and thanked him for harvests, rivers, life, etc.

What about Hotel California by The Eagles? There have been all kinds of interpretations of that song; a friend of mine once told me that it was either about a prostitute or drugs. I read up on it, and apparently it was actually about the state of California (go figure - lol). Similarly, NIN has a song that is disputable: is about a prostitute, or heroin? Hmm. And of course there's Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (The Beatles)... drugs, mayhaps? Probably. I guess songs that are open to interpretation are always good. People like when they can relate songs to themselves, so they can apply the meaning however they'd like.
