Several popular gaming magazines and website have attempted to rank the top video games of all time. Time and time again, the Legend of Zelda makes the top of the list, from Ocarina of Time to The Wind Waker and Link's Awakening.

Personally, I prefer the original Super Mario Bros. (or even some Duck Hunt), but I've never been a huge gamer anyway.

To the more experienced gamers out there: What do you think is the best video game of all time?

You can chime in here, or weigh in on the "Zelda" question in today's featured "Opinion" topics: http://debate.org...

The only games that could possibly take the title would be from the Mario, Zelda, or Metal Gear franchises. They each have the magic amount of revolution, nostalgia, and entertainment. I'd also include the Pokemon franchise to that list but the fan base isn't as large there.

My vote would be for Pokemon: Red, followed by The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Skyrim. But if we're going for classic games, then I'll side with Maikuru and say pokemon. I've never played any of the Zelda's unfortunently.

This is not such a simple subject; by what measure is a game 'the best'?

I have plenty of favourites, but the most important category to me is replayability; does the game begged to be played more and more... so Tetris reigns supreme as it's as relevant now as it was 20 years ago.

My personal favourite game of all time is Metal Gear Solid.

Could not agree more, and I've said this in a couple other threads. In 20 years the 'great' games we are talking about now might still be considered great but we likely will have moved on to other things. Mario is still fun to play, as are some of the Zelda games, but I still pick Tetris on a regular basis.

Where to begin...obviously I think the Halo series is the best shooter of all time, for innovation, and fun, very much so skilled based combat as opposed to who saw who first. I personally like Reach the most, thought I suspect Halo 4 will convert me.

As for RPG, I sadly have little experiences in this area, but ME series was incredle. I say it as a series as opposed to one game, because honestly, it's just one REALLY long 180 dollar game. The additions that were made change stuff a lot, but since RPGs as something like 60% story, Ill just say the whole series. Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is amazing don't get me wrong....but I wish they could tell a story better. They do incredible considering the immense size and scope of the game, but overall I think TES series, while incredible, is overrated. I love them, but they get too much hype, too much fanboyism.

As for whatever genre Legend of Zelda belongs too, I think my favorite is
Wind Waker, or Majoras Mask.

Wind Waker because I loved the traveling/island system, the art style will still look great years from now, and just the overall comic-book feel. Majoras Mask for the awesome timer gimmick, and masks. I feel like Ocarina of Time is another one of those overrated games, where people mistake nostalgia for a great game.

Kinda hard to say. I'd probably go with Max Payne 3. The games story-telling is hands down the best I've ever seen. The gameplay is all-around great, voice-acting is top notch. The way bullets hit bodies....just extremely visceral. I'm not a nostalgic person, I think it's a worthless trait, but Max Payne 3 will resonate with me for years

I'd be willing to debate that nostalgia isn't useless.

Oh god...asking nerds what their favorite video game is is like asking fat people what their favorite type of candy is (tie between Skittles and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, thank you very much). Anyway, god that's a hard choice.

Right now I'm obligated to sh*t on a few misconceptions: Mario just wasn't all that good. As an oldie classic, it was okay. But after Paper Mario it went downhill fast. Maybe even a little before that. Ocarina of time was okay, but it gets really repetitive after a while (as does Twilight Princess sadly). And I've never actually played the Metal Gear series.

All that said, I can't really give a solid answer overall, since each genre is better than the other in certain perspectives and I can't really quantify it any other way but to split it into my favorite genre's and then my favorite game for each genre.

Shooter:

Yeah, this is one of my favorite genres. I'm one of those nerds. Shut it. Anyway, I prefer my shooters with a bit more realism and those that actually cater to the game and not to the online capability of the game. Which is why I'm inclined to pick Spec Ops: The Line as my favorite shooter. All of the other shooters go really thin in content and substance with their games and Campaigns (or, in Call of Duty's case, split things up into short campaign and tedious EXP grinding side missions that have no point). However, Spec Ops: The Line has a very gripping, compelling story line while STILL being a great third person shooter. A close second would have to be Alpha Protocol, simply because it has slightly worse game play, but it is more replay-able than Spec Ops.

RPG:

Hmmm....too many to pick from. Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, KOTOR, and so many others get on the list. This one is certainly interesting. But I think for a favorite one of all time, I have to go with Final Fantasy XIII-2 for it's immersability in the story line. In a RPG game, I like to be able to throw myself into the story line like a child throws themselves into a cool pool in the middle of a summer day. I don't like to wade in slowly and get excited about things toward the end. XIII-2 gets me started and wanting to keep going early on and, generally, doesn't ever let up. The only thing that would make XIII-2 greater would be if Square Enix stopped messing around with the stupid real-time/turn-based mix of a combat system and just went back to the classic turn-based combat system. Shesh, it's annoying as hell. Anyway, if I had to pick a second place finisher, it'd probably be Dragon Quest XIII: Quest of the Cursed King. God I loved that game so much as a kid...

Halo went and helped jumpstart the wave of slow-asss shooters.

Max Payne 3 was basically a movie. When I play game, I don't want to watch a rendered cutscenes of a guy opening a door. I want to open that goddarn door myself.

No, but 90% of the time its the reason why people like an old game that has much better sequels to it.
