Yeah it was definitely very hardcore for a science fiction movie, and it had some very cool ideas. Although there were some pretty stupid inconsistencies and plot holes as well (shooting his wife without hesitation when the entire point was that it was impossible to get away with murder in the future would be one).

Also, the entire story about a psychotic toddler with deadly telepathic powers living in the rural Midwest and and whose adult caretakers who are terrified of him is lifted directly from a short story called It's a Good Life by Jerome Bixby. Not that that's not a cool concept.
