Heroes was good at first, but then spiralled downwards. If you had the chance to re-write it, what would you change?

Here's what I would have done:

Volume 1 was okay, so I won't change it (not worth my time).

Volume 2, I would have made the following changes:

Episode 1: Sylar is revealed to be alive. Kensei's abilities are shown. Nikki gets into trouble and is rescued by DL, who is infected with the Shanti virus, forcing both of them to go to the company.

Episode 2: Hiro teaches Kensei how to be a hero (and screws it up). Peter gains Ricky's trust. Elle appears now instead of in Episode 5. Monica discovers her abilities now instead of in Episode 4.

Episode 3: Sylar is rescued by Maya and Alejandro. Elle kills Ricky. Hiro wraps up the Feudal Japan arc and returns to the present.

Episode 4: Hiro tries to save his father and discovers that Kensei killed him, then accidentally teleports to the outbreak future. Maury Parkman tries to control Nikki, but her split personality gets in the way, so he controls DL and makes them fight. Peter and Caitlin search for Ricky's killer and end up in Montreal, where they meet Adam.

Episode 5: Hiro discovers that Adam released the Shanti virus and returns to the present to stop him. Adam helps Peter regain his memory, but Caitlin still doesn't trust him. Nikki kills DL in self-defence and injects herself with the Shanti virus. Monica and Micah start fighting crime.

Episode 6: Nikki has a breakdown and goes AWOL. The Company freezes DL's body in the hopes of reviving him with Claire's blood. Mohinder, Bob and Elle go after Claire.

Episode 7: Nathan and Matt investigate the founders. Adam offers to help Caitlin get revenge on Elle, causing conflict between her and Peter. Hiro goes back in time to find out more about the Shanti virus. Maya learns to control her ability, Sylar kills Alejandro. Monica tries to retrieve Micah's stuff from the thugs and is captured.

Episode 8: Peter, Caitlin and Adam visit Victoria Pratt. Nikki returns home to Micah, and the two of them go after Monica. Sylar and Maya reach New York. Mohinder, having got a cure for the Shanti virus, prepares to use Molly to find Nikki. Peter, Adam and Caitlin go to Primatech. Claire plans to go public about her abilities.

Episode 9: Hiro confronts Peter. Noah convinces Claire not to go public. Nathan and Matt arrive at Primatech and struggle with Peter while Adam goes to "destroy" the virus. Nikki rescues Monica but is trapped in the fire, Monica must use her skills to get them both out. Sylar steals both vials of Claire's blood and heals himself. Hiro confronts Adam.

Episode 10: The Shanti virus is released. Matt uses his telepathy to quarantine Odessa, Texas. Nikki discovers Mohinder's voice message saying he has a cure, and so she, Monica and Micah stow away on a freight train to return to New York. Mohinder, Maya, Bob and Elle go to Odessa to deal with the Shanti virus. Claire gets the same idea.

Episode 11: Claire arrives in Odessa and starts donating blood to the infected, but the virus is spreading too fast. Adam gives the others the slip and tries to thwart their attempts to contain the virus. Caitlin goes after Elle. Nikki, Micah and Monica encounter Sylar, who attempts to steal their powers.

Episode 12: Hiro catches the Shanti virus and is forced to confront Adam without his powers. Nikki sacrifices herself to protect Micah and Monica, and is caught in a railroad crash with Sylar. Sylar takes Nikki's power but, realising he doesn't have to kill her, injects her with the 2nd vial of Claire's blood, allowing her to heal and escape. Maya discovers she can reverse the effects of the Shanti virus. Peter convinces Caitlin not to kill Elle. The heroes all return home. Peter promises to visit Caitlin, then returns to where Nathan is holding the press conference and gets shot.

I'd have Volume 3 follow roughly the same plot as in real life, except:

- Tracey really is Nikki and has changed personalities as a result of her attack by Sylar. Part of her quest is to rebuild her relationship with Micah.

- Arthur's ability works more like Rogue's (X-Men), in that he drains life force and powers. Only regenerators can survive this, as their life force renews itself.

- Adam survives to cause trouble later.

- Peter doesn't lose his powers, he just has to re-learn them using Sylar's ability. This causes him to become aggressive and Hiro slashes him with his sword, giving him the scar. The whole experience makes him more reserved, thus less in touch with his empathy, thus less powerful, and more mature.

- Hiro doesn't get mind-wiped or de-powered, avoiding his lame rescue in Episode 13.

- Sylar, after stealing Claire's power, has the option of injecting people he likes with his blood, allowing them to heal. He uses this to save Elle, though she's angry with him (and pregnant with his son, as seen in the future). Sylar leaves her to find his real parents.

- The Eclipse is the catalyst, which switches abilities on and off.

Volume 4:

- Matt keeps his precog abilities.

- Nathan's death is done differently (I don't know how, but it just can't be as lame as what they did).

I haven't thought any further because the series just became too screwed-up to salvage.

I would make it so that the writers didn't go on strike in the middle of season 2 and completely f*ck everything up.

Tim Kring was actually picketing outside, whilst complaining about having to change all the plots due to there being no writers. You really can't have it both ways in that situation.
