Step 1: Throw it at pokemon
Step 2: Pokemon shrinks and hops into the ball
Step 3: It shakes around a bit.
Step 4: It either gets captured or hops out of the pokeball and goes back to its normal size again.

Step 1: Press button
Step 2: Throw at Pokemon

In midair, the ball emits a laser that sucks the pokemon up and into the ball. To release the pokemon out of its ball:

Step 1: Press and hold button
Step 2: As you throw, let go of the button.

The question was the mechanism that contains the pokemon not how to use a pokeball. For example some people say it turns the pokemon to energy and others say it shrinks them.
