With a historical focus and accuracy. Preferable Middle Age - 1800's.

And please no-one say Empire: Total War or games in the Total War series.

Well, if you're willing to pay for it, then the Age of Empires series is the best you'll get along that line.

I highly reccommend AoE. It's fun and it's helped me with AP World.

Rise of Nations is great, I highly recommend it. Historically though, there is no emphasis on events, but each nation does have special units and abilities base on its past.

Civ 4 is one the best turned based games and Civ 4 Beyond the Sword has scenarios with colonial settings, pre gun powder, etc.
Library cards: Stopping stupid one book at a time.
