I consider it weird to watch sitcoms because no one seems to do anything constructive with their time - its just a bunch of people standing around saying stupid sh11. Although the characters have "jobs" and may even do some scenes in a workplace setting, no one ever is actually doing work - it is a sharp contrast with real life (at least a successful one) where you would spend large amounts of time cleaning, working, running errands, etc.

It seems to me that sitcoms should have a negative effect on society, causing:

hopelessness: People live out the characters' social lives, careers, and hobbies instead of their own.

lethargy: The characters are predominantly people who are well off financially but who seemingly don't do much to get it.

obedience: The characters are very satisfied with the way things are, generally speaking. Other than just keeping you in front of the tube instead of being active (in virtually every sense), the characters seem to subliminally say "things are fine just how they are."

Am I just overthinking this or do you think that these anti-values are enforced by sitcoms?

Yes, you are overthinking this.

Popular media is meant to be entertaining. If people wanted to watch their own lives, they wouldn't need it. And it's escape. Everyone knows that. Don't take fiction too seriously.

Same! Criminal Intent is boring, and the actors suck.
I love SVU.

I enjoy Criminal Intent, especially with Goren - the psychology always interests me.

criminal intent (that's the one with the weird guy.. right) BLOWS...

and the original (with mccoy) is the best.

I can't judge you guys for watching stuff like that in your free time because I play online FPSs when I want to relax, which is just as useless as sitcoms, I suppose, although FPSs are extremely challenging and I consider it a skill that I am honing (much like when I play my guitar). My problem with sitcoms is that they seem to establish a status quo for the people... E.g. here are all these models that are smart and witty (more so than you will ever be) and here's how they think. It's a powerful tool of control. When you consider that 4 or 5 companies own 3 quarters of the content you watch and have direct control over everything you see in those shows, it's pretty scary. You guys are on a debate site expressing your opinions and ideas in free discussion, however your ideas are heavily influenced by the shows and characters you idolize which are in turn controlled by several large corporate entities with agendas and profit motives. It's hard not to look at you guys as sheep... I mean, there is something to be said for the fact that:
1) Most likely, the people in your lives are not as physically attractive as the characters you are idolizing on these shows. That goes for anyone, of course, but the fact that certain people flock to these models is interesting.
2) Theses people are a whole lot more interesting than the folks you know as well. Instead of hanging around the real people you know, you are one-way fraternizing with these people on the screen who wouldn't be caught dead even knowing you. If you met any of these people that play these characters they would walk the opposite way and do anything they could to get away from you.
