The year was 2024, and the University of Illinois basketball stadium was the place. Bsh1 and I sat back in the audience which was already filled with overjoyed, but already nostalgic parents. Parents, brothers, sisters and extended family filled the auditorium. The university's band was warming up in the background. Kids who looked like they hadn't worn suits since the wedding they went to last summer sat beside grandparents who were similarly dressed. Ornate graduation regalia hung throughout the center, brandishing the university's colors and creed wherever practicable.

In the auditorium well, far down below, I saw 1harder sitting in his graduation cap and gown. He was in the fourth row back from the front on the right side. His name would be the seventieth called. Yes, I counted, while listening to bsh1 describe how this moment felt for us. He was going to graduate with honors, and he looked adorable with his cap tilted slightly to the right and the honorary gold chords draped around his neck. Magna cum laude. It had been a long journey for all of us.

His mother and brothers were there in the audience too. His mother knew who we were, but she didn't know that I was attending this graduation ceremony because of her son. But I knew, and he knew.

'How long before this is over?' Chris texted bsh1.

'Savor this moment.' Bsh1 texted back. 'You only get to do this once.'

'I just want to get to the party afterwards.' Chris replied.

'There will be time for that. But you have to go have lunch with your mom and brother's first. Then, tell them you're going back to your apartment and you can hang out with us.' bsh1 replied.

'Smile kiddo!' I texted Chris after I saw Bsh1 put his phone away.

I was tremendously proud of him, and I couldn't help but smile myself.

The University's president and a few of the speakers who were receiving honorary degrees walked out onto the stage. They were received with thunderous applause. A basketball player who had done some humanitarian work, a politician and a reality TV star. I didn't really understand why the reality TV star was receiving an honorary degree, but we went with it.

You did a 5 year program.

And no one can really predict when they are out of college.

Some people I know were a year early. A year late. Dropped out for various reasons. Etc Etc.

I wouldn't be able to afford being an undergrad for five years.

You'd be surprised. But yeah. Still. Hard to predict. I thought I was gonna be a 4 year grad. I was a 3 year grad.

That depends on a *very specific* definition of "short". But yes, I agree.
