CHAPTER 7

Meetings were such tedious business. So was waging a war. Little men moving across boards: a game of Risk, and each turn, each delicate move, each roll of the dice, carefully planned and carefully executed. I was growing weary of playing the game.

The battle for Borneo had been stalled for weeks along the Balikpapan-Pontianak line, and in Malaysia near Kaeng Krung National Park. The high elevations in the latter area had given Cyber and his forces a significant strategic edge, making any assault on the region impractical, given the current number of troops. ON Generals were estimating a 40% casualty rate in any direct assault, and sustaining those kinds of losses would make us incapable of advancing farther along the peninsula towards Singapore.

If Pontianak could be taken, it was possible that a naval assault could be launched somewhere south of Cyber's position in the Kaeng Krung region, and he could be encircled, but that would be another large risk. The FL had, in its years outside of ON rule, developed a very strong naval force, and the number of vessels that would be needed to adequately protect a amphibious invasion force would be massive, and could leave other vital areas unprotected. The FL had already used its navy to hit harbors all across the world: Manilla, Pusan, Chennai, Cape Town, Buenos Aires, Panama City, Seattle, Vancouver...Trade routes had been disrupted and civilian ocean travel highly restricted. Any diversion of a fleet for an encircling maneuver that might not work could prove disastrous. No, the only option was a direct assault, and for that, more troops had to be mustered so that the army could absorb the losses.

The question, of course, was how to get the troops. Hence, the boring meetings.

It was determined that voluntary recruitment was no longer an option; people were unwilling to sign up at rates sufficient to meet the ever-growing need. I called on a draft to be implemented, in the name of the glorious Order of Neighbors. As Blade would often say, "Neighbors must help one another. And when they refuse, they must be guided towards the path of neighborliness. Only by working together can peace and prosperity be achieved." And he was quite right.

I made the announcement to the nation, reminding them of their sacred duties to the state, and the goals the ON was fighting to realize. These appeals convinced many, but unfortunately, many still needed guidance. And, as their neighbor, it was my job to help them. Areas of North America were particularly resistant to these efforts, and so I was compelled to deploy thousands of thug-police to enforce the draft orders. Curfews were in place, and people who failed to answer the summons within 14 days were hunted down and imprisoned until they agree to either answer their summons or until the strange cuts that seemed to magically appear on them during their stay in prison killed them. I blamed the epidemic on rat infestations and disease, but, tragically, we just didn't have the money to invest in pest control. Instead, I commanded prison guards to give extra attention to those jailed for their resistance, hoping this would increase their quality of care.

Soon, the military's numbers were swelling once again, and trainees were hurried through programs as quickly as possible. There wasn't time to give them too much in-depth instruction; as long as they were drilled, disciplined, and able to operate their weapons, they were front-line ready. General Raisor, leading the effort against Cyber, would need bodies more than minds in this strike.

Once the forces had been recruited and trained and deployed, a process that took about 8 months to fully effect, I authorized the assault. Finally the tedium would end.

I enjoyed the robotic efficiency with which the ON was able to accomplish these tasks; it was refreshing to see the order we had brought to the world pay its dividends against the FL. With the FL's obliteration, the world could finally function as smoothly, as efficaciously, as robotically, as it should, and peace would be the mark of the ON's rule.

It took a few days, but Raisor succeeded in pushing out Cyber from the Kaeng Krung region. Cyber's forces had to retreat all the way back to Songkhla. Casualty rates had climbed as high as 57%, but I wasn't concerned. The objective had been achieved, and the ON was now one step closer to total control. Cyber's position was now far less defensible, and Raisor reported that he foresaw no major roadblocks to taking Singapore in the near future. I was pleased.

I felt a thrill that I hadn't felt since Blade was deposed. The ON dream was once again the central focus of the world. All the worries I had once had were gone: peace had to be achieved, and I was the only one capable of leading the ON to that goal without compromising the ON's most precious ideals. Victory, that was the only word on my mind.

Actually, since "schon" typically has an umlaut in German, it would be better transliterated as "Dankeschoern."

Lack of comments. The general reaction I've gotten from people: "I didn't know you had a fan fic." Getting very few votes in fan polls, etc.

Sounds like a good measuring stick. At least you're not relying on comments 100%. I know I don't comment on the occasional ones I read, not that I'm a consistent reader.

I think the over-saturation of fanfictions literally drowned the interest people had in reading them since they became overwhelmed by how many fanfics there were in existence at one point.

Yeah...I agree...I mean, if interest picks up, I might finish this one. Only 3 Chapters left out of the 10 I had planned.

You've got to bring the interest, giving up will lose all the interest you already have and remove your potential interest.

Nooo, don't stop. I just read this one. Haven't read the others, but I will. I dislike stories with unsatisfying endings.

Lol.

As Blade always said, "You must continue writing your fanfic regardless of the fact that you may think that there is a loss of interest in it, don't give in. persevere, finish what hath started."
-Blade (paraphrased by Hayd the Great)

Eh...I guess I will. But there really isn't much interest.

You've got to bring the interest, giving up will lose all the interest you already have and remove your potential interest.

Eh...I am not going to promote this more than I already have.

Epsilon: There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith.
