I always thought that "Miller" referred to the profession of Miller as in, one who Mills.

However, according to this site (http://web.archive.org...)

It's named after a person. What's interesting here is:

"An important part of this role is that the Miller is unaware of his own identity. He is either selected randomly by the moderator, or the moderator predetermines that a specific civilian card will be the Miller and notes who gets that card. The secrecy is important, so that the Miller can't just come forward on the first round, declaring, "I'm the Miller.""

Now, this isn't necessarily a death miller, as it doesn't address what the mod reveals when they die, just that the investigate guilty, but don't know that they do.

Yeah, that's how it should be done imo. I used an unaware miller in my beginner game and TV did in the HvV game. It actually serves the purpose of making a townie seem guilty, rather than an instant confirmation.

I have an idea for a concept game that is basically a classic game, but people are randomly assigned secret role modifiers.

For example:
Strong (Actions cannot be blocked)
Weak (Dies if targets non-town)
Ascetic (Immune to being targeted by non-killing actions)

Etc.

Miller would probably be one such "modifier"

I think this spin on the role is more fitted towards sites like epic mafia, where people know what roles are in each game. otherwise, someone coming out and saying "i got investigated guilty? I must be the miller" seems so shady that they would get lynched every single time.

But the mod could arbitrarily assign a miller role to any role in the game like watcher for instance. Then that person would claim watcher and give their results and town would decide whether or not they are guilty.

I strive to make known roles more difficult to play, to avoid people falling into the SOP.
I will NEVER, EVER tell the Miller that they are the Miller again.
Some other options:
Multiple millers, to encourage counter-claims.
1-shot miller, will appear guilty the first time they're investigated and innocent any time after.
