Welcome to the first game in the 10.x Beginner's Series of Mafia Games!

Introduction To Mafia(Written By TUF):

At first this may all sound a bit complicated (it's not), but after you play a game, you will start to understand it a little better. While their are quite a few game mechanics that go into mafia, the best way for you to learn is simply to play. But I will give you a brief (as I can) Version of how to play.

Mafia is a team based game, where 2-4 different teams compete against each other to win.

Here is the basic set up of teams.

TOWN- The town make up the majority of all living players. The goal of the town is to lynch, and eliminate all players that are not affiliated with the town. The town collectively gets to choose one player to lynch during each day phase.

MAFIA- The mafia make up the Minority of the players. The goal of the mafia, is to become the majority team, by trying to lie and deceive the town, and best blend in with them as possible. The mafia get to choose one person each night to kill during the night phase, which then eliminates that player from the game. The mafia can communicate separately through a pm with each other, outside the DP.

3RD PARTIES- Generally there will be 1 or 2, 3RD party players in each game. The goal of most third parties, is to survive to the end of the game which will result in a win. Most 3rd parties are bullet proof (meaning they cannot be night killed, only lynched during the day). Their win condition rises above all teams. Even if the mafia are the majority team, if a 3rd party survivor makes it to the end, the survivor will take 1st place. If the town eliminates all mafia, but the survivor remains, the survivor still wins first place. While this sounds like an easy win condition, it is actually one of the harder win conditions. There are rarely 3rd party wins.

CULT- The Cult are an abridged form of a 3rd party team. Most games will not have a cult involved in it, unless they are fairly large (20+ players). Cult's can work several ways. The original cult Idea, started out with a cult recruiter, who could slowly increase his/her army size by recruiting some one into their cult each night. When a person is recruited by the cult, there win condition then changes with the cult. Some Version of the Cult, will start out with a set group of people. The way for the cult to win, is to have the majority team by the end game. The cult can talk separately from the DP in a private PM as well.

Okay so now that I have covered the 4 majorly used teams, I will go over some of the basics with you on roles.

ROLES- Each player is assigned a role at the beginning of the game. Roles play a big part in mafia, as they can widely effect how suspicion is drawn, and what does what. I am going to tell you the most popular roles that you will see. Roles are something most player can use in the night phase, to either perform an action, or to get some sort of result.

COMMON TOWN POWER ROLES-

COP- The cop is generally a townie role. This role allows a player to select a target during the night phase, and receive investigative results, on whether or not that player is guilty or innocent. If the cop gets a guilty result on a player it is generally assumed that the player investigated, is mafia, or not affiliated with the town (both Cult and 3rd party will appear guilty upon investigation as well)

DOCTOR- The doctor is generally a townie role that is implemented in each game. The doctor is a very important townie role, because each night phase the doctor may choose one player to protect. If that player was targeted by the mafia, the mafia night kill will then, no longer go through.

WATCHER- The watcher is an essential power role as well. A watcher is an investigative type role, that allows the player to choose a player each night. When he views that player, he will then see all the players that visited him in the night. This is a powerful role, as it provides plenty of investigative leads when actions are conflicting. The watcher is also a common mafia role, but is referred to as a 'Mafia lookout' for that team.

TRACKER- The Tracker is sort of the opposite of the Watcher. When tracking a person during the night phase, you get to see who they particularly visited.

VIGILANTE- Can choose 1 player each night to night kill. This is a town affiliated role, and should always be used with extreme caution, as kills against random people, my result in the town losing numbers quickly.

VANILLA- No role, no night action, only a lynch vote!

There are ALOT more townie roles than this, but these are the main power roles.

MAFIA POWER ROLES:

GODFATHER- The godfather is the best mafia role possibly, because godfathers will generally appear innocent to all types of investigations. If the cop visits the godfather, he will receive an innocent result, even though this player is really mafia affiliated.

ROLEBLOCKER- This can rarely be a townie role, but is most commonly used as a mafia role. This is a great role because, it will disable the player that he chooses during the night. That player will no longer be able to perform their night actions.

GOON- No role, just the ability to talk in the mafia pm, and to cast a lynch vote!

Again there are plenty more mafia roles to be found. I am only providing you with the basic ones you will most likely see.

HOW THE GAME WORKS:

Each game is moderated by a different User. Their is a mod list, that you can actually wait your turn in line in, before modding your own game. The mod creates roles, concepts, set-ups, and basically everything. The current wait time between being able to mod each game is running at about a month, to a month in a half. Games are always going though, and there is generally about four pro games going on at a time, with 1 noob series game going on for new players. Sign up on the mod list if you would like to mod a game.

Rules very on each moderator, but most rules are commonly shared by most mods.

Day and night phases: There is 2 phases in this game; a day and a night phase. The day phase is where players can actively contribute, and decide collectively who they want to lynch. The night phase is where only the mafia can talk, and decide who they want to kill. The town can submit their role actions during this time however.

Lynch votes: Each player gets a lynch vote during the day phase. After discussing with your teamates who you feel to be the best lead based on behavior, results, etc, you can place a lynch vote on that player. When the majority of players cast a lynch vote on that person, that player will be lynched, and then is removed from the game. Casting a lynch vote is simple. All you have to do is say "VTL soandso" And Bold it for it to count. The moderator will keep track of that vote count. When "soandso" accrues enough votes he will be lynched. Let's say this is a game with 15 players. "Soandso" will be lynched as soon as 8 players cast their lynch vote on him, as 8 is the majority number out of 15. When a person is lynched, the day phase ends, and it goes to the night phase. The night phase ends when all players have given their night actions, or when the time limit expires.

EXTRAS: Votes can be retraced simply by saying and bolding the word "Unvote", and they can then be re-cast up until someone is actually lynched by the majority of players. Players can also VTNL (Vote to not lynch) meaning they simply want the day phase to end without killing a player. This is commonly done on DP1 to avoid mis-lynching.
