Official FATE Guide
There have been over 30 game of FATE Core on this site, but none have followed the official rules and set up. Therefore, I've taken it upon myself to write the actual, and official, rule guide for the role playing game known as FATE. Let's begin with the set up, and hopefully this will lead to more FATE games on this site.

Working the Mod List
The mod list is quite simple. There will be people designated as list monitors. Often you will update your game, and add it directly to the mod list. Once your turn comes up on the mod list, you'll be allowed to start your game. The flow works like this....

- 2 games currently in progress
- 3 games in sign up stage
- Every other moderation waiting for sign ups

The list moderator will then approve your game once one of the two finishes. If a moderator tries to start a game before reaching the top of the list, all players should blacklist their game.

Setting up a game
There are several things that must be determined when setting up a game of FATE.

- Game Name
- Theme/Setting
- Zones (map)
- Phases
- Issues (current events, upcoming events, player specific events)
- Players
- Aspects
- Extra Mechanics

Theme
The theme of a game is the central revolving core of how the players will progress. For example, if a FATE game is based on Game of Thrones, then Issues, Characters, and Mechanics would be based off of Game of Thrones. The more engaging your theme is, the more room for creativity.

Zones
Zones are an extremely common factor involved in FATE games, but are also optional. Zones take effect when a game is played on a map. These basically represent the playing field of the player. This is often seen when a player controls a "city", "kingdom", "nation", ect. Zones can remain constant or expand throughout the phases. If you need additional help on zoning, refer to this link.

Phases
This is known as the extent of a game, or how long it will last. There are two forms of phasing. Some phases can be solely used for character building and once they end, time to complete the objectives, or, character building can occur in the phases, as the game progresses. After every phase, the current statistics of players are revealed.

Issues
There are three kinds of Issues in FATE core......

1) Universal Issues, or events that affect all players
2) Impending Issues, or events that will eventually occur
3) Specific Issues, or events that affect 1-2 players

These are to be determined by the mods. These are usually to keep players focused on a common objective, rather than simply building strength the whole game.

Aspects
This is simply known as flavor. There are two forms of flavor.

1) Character aspects
2) Story aspects

A character aspect is a flavored element that applies to one player in particular, while a story aspect is something that flavors the story. For example, if Robby and Timmy engage in combat, and Robby was more skillful, he would win. But Timmy has an aspect that negates one PW from Robby, therefore, he wins.

Extra Mechanics
These are known as hacks, or changes to the rules. A hack is whenever you change the conventional mechanics, or add rules of your own,IE, changing the rules in a game of Yahoo!

Player Guide
Playing FATE is often confusing and complicated for many people. Therefore this section of the guide, will be dedicated towards teaching people how to play. The guide will be broken into several sections.

2.1 - Creating a Character
2.2 - Skills
2.3 - Submitting actions
2.4 - Developing your character
2.5 - Aspect Trees
2.6 - Winning the Game

2.1: Creating a Character
When making your character, there are several things to remember...

1) What is my characters name?
2) Does my character have a backstory (optional)?
3) How am I dividing my skills?
4) What aspects did I choose, and do they fit the theme?

There are generally two approaches to making skills. The moderator can distribute the skills appropriately, or allow you to distribute them, adding a layer of strategy to the game. You can create your own aspects in the game, but they must be approved by the moderator. To learn about the different kinds of aspects, visit here...

2.2: Skills
The moderator who creates the game, decides the skill categorization. Once you start the game, you will be given a pool of points to put into each. These will effect your game experience, strategy, and your ability to play. The maximum skill for something is usually 4, although this can be changed by the moderator. Example.....

Charisma: 4
Strength: 2
Sexual Prowess: 1

Take your time when setting your skills. They will affect your game playing ability greatly. The exact effect of the skills is up to the mod. Depending on the dice you have (mods may use random.org), the ladder will look like this...

2.3: Submitting Actions
There are two PM's (private messages) that will always be available in this game. The group PM and the individual PM. The group PM is where people make actions as a group. Players aren't encouraged to talk here, but in the game forum. The second PM is your individual PM. This is where you make singular actions. Such as "Attack Johnson". All actions must be in bold!

Ex: Move troops to border

Depending on your skills and the flip of a online dice generator, your action will either fail of succeed.

2.4: Developing your character
Throughout the game, you will progress your character. This is done by doing certain actions attributed by the mod. A typical interaction looks like this...

Player: Swindle Peddler
Mod: Congratulations! You successfully swindled the peddler. You gain one Charisma!

It is important to realize your skills before putting them into effect. If they fail, there might be consequences, or your skill may even fall. The higher your skill, the more likely an action will succeed.

2.5: Aspect Trees
Aspect Trees are a form of progression that happens at each phase. These are optional, but can be utilized to advance moderators. A simple system ends the phase with the moderator asking each player what power they want to choose. These aspects can be passive or invoking. You unlock aspects based on how many fate points you have. Fate points are earned through moderators pre defined actions. Fate points can also be interpreted as "wealth", which is a optional currency in the game.

2.6: Winning the Game
You win the game by achieving a set of conditions pre-defined by the moderator. A typical win condition could be the following...

- Kill the player
- Control 75% of the zones
- Be the wealthiest player

Extras, Options, and Additional Elements
The following section of the guide is dedicated towards optional feautures found in the game. These include VLM's, magic, game elements, and other mechanics which make the game very fun. The section will be divided like this.

3.1 - Currency
3.2 - Very Large Monsters (VLM)
3.3 - Utilizing Magic
3.4 - Stress
3.5 - Reputation
3.6 - World Changes

3.1: Currency
Currency is an optional moderator based element, which dictates itself like a statistic. Currency can affect usual elements of the game. A couple examples....

- Buy spell for 50 gold
- Employ the services of a prostitute for 50$
- Sell a sword for 80 tree branches

3.2: Very Large Monsters
Monsters are a new player made element to FATE core. They function as zone warfare. Or you may need to take 2,3, or 4 zones to kill a monster. Monsters function as NPC's, and are meant to take coordinated efforts to defeat. Each VLM has a weakness which makes it easier to kill.

Additionally, players may form organizations to defeat monsters. Like factions and armies, organizations lose stress and function as an individual character. The exact roles of organizations can be found in this thread....

3.3: Utilizing Magic
Magic is an element in some FATE games. Magic takes place as an aspect, and there are three ways to create a magic spell.

- Ask the moderator to create one, and he'll tell you the conditions
- Buy one from a NPC or something
- Find one or something

Every time you use a magic spell, your stress negates.

3.4: Stress
Stress is an optional element in FATE. Every time you use magic or commit an action, you lose stress. Some mods simply make you lose stress from failing actions. When you lose stress, you must regain it. Lost stress means no more actions. Magic can actually negate stress. If you cast a spell past your stress level, your character enters Fae mode. Or a themed alternative. What happens in this mode is dependent on the moderator. There are 4 levels of stress...

4 - Maximum
3 - =/=
2 - =/=
1 - Minimum
0 - None
-1 - Consequences
-2 - Fae mode

3.5: Reputation
Reputation is a factor in FATE that dictates your standings with....

1) Factions
2) Characters
3) NPC's
4) General Places
5) Other

Depending on your reputation, which should be decided on a scale of 1-10, certain actions or options will be open to you. High reputations could lead to more missions and opportunities, while low reputation could lead to hostility or less opportunities.

3.6: World Changes
Throughout the game phases, the world will change. This is do to actions that players commit. For example, if a player says to the moderator, "Kill King Tiny Dick", then you would notice the change in the next game phase.

It isn't really as complicated as you think. I can simplify it in a shorter guide....

1) Build character
2) Tell me what you want to do
3) I tell you if it works
4) Rinse and Repeat

I'll be honest, his game was mafia. He was trying to skip the mod list. Anyways, I'm running a game. I'm the new list moderator, so I control the stickied forum! The old games use to be a blast. We would get about 25 people in some.

FATE games are very hard to play with a lot of players. They're very flexible, so you can play a game for about a month with 4-6 dedicated players. Freedo, Lucky, and Donald's games use to last one to two months.
How about NO elections?
