Aloha!

As always, I hope you enjoyed the game! Please wait until I've posted everything before commenting. Thanks!

SUMMARY

WINNER: Mafia
SECOND PLACE: Town
THIRD PLACE: Converted TP

MAFIA MVP: Dalt
TOWN MVP: Trekie
OVERALL MVP: Dalt

MAFIA

Dalt - You are a HIPPOGRIFF. The union of two natural enemies (a gryffin and a mare), you are a powerful symbol of love--no one could suspect you of being scum! In fact, they would believe that you are something wholesome, wonderful, and town. Therefore, you are the GODFATHER. You will appear to be Vanilla to a Role Cop, unarmed to a Gunsmith, and innocent/not guilty to a Cop. You win with the mafia.

Smithers - You are a UNICORN. Probably one of the most universally respected, liked, and well-known mythological creatures, your stature in folklore alone is enough to make you stand out. Because you are the king of creatures, as it were, you are the JOAT. You have the following 3-shot abilities: STRONGMAN and NINJA. As Strongman, if you carry out the NK, you will bypass protective abilities. As Ninja, if you carry out the NK, you will not be observed by Trackers or Watchers. You win with the mafia.

[Hidden Flavor: You are 1x Random. The first time you use your abilities, your target will be randomized.]

[Mod Note: Converted to Vanilla after having role stolen]

Forever - You are PHOENIX. Also well-known, you have been a symbol of rebirth, renewal, and even the resurection of Christ, throughout history. Because of your appeal, charisma, and ability to captivate us through your symbolic importance, you are POPULAR. It will take 1 extra vote to lynch you. You win with the mafia.

YYW - You are a TOMTE. Because you are the guardian of the household, protecting it from all manner of enemies and blocking their entrance across the threshold, you are the 3-shot ROLEBLOCKER. At night, you may select a player and prevent them from using their role. You win with the mafia.

TOWN

Vaar - You are an OGRE. You are a fairly dull and dumb mythical creature; you're neither cool and exciting nor smart and cunning. You are VANILLA. You have no role. You win with the town.

Trekie (2) (Coca) (Space) (316) - You are a CHIMERA. You are immortal. Thus, you are BULLETPROOF. You are immune from NKs. You win with the town.

Cobalt (2) (Wylted) - You are a BASILISK. You kill anyone who looks into your eyes and you leave a trail of venom in your wake. As any assailant is apt to either look into your eyes or foolishly step in your venomous residue, you are the BOMB. If NK'd, you kill your killer. You win with the town.

Blazro - You are a GOBLIN. You are a rather generic magical creature, and could fill in anywhere a bad-guy is needed in a fairy tale. Thus, you are the UNIVERSAL BACK-UP. You will take on the role of the first townie to die. You win with the town.

[Mod Note: Became the 2x Vig after Voice's Mod-kill]

Midnight - You are a SPHNIX. In Greek mythology, you are a force of malevolence, yet in Egyption lore, you are a benevolent actor. Due to your dual nature, you are the TURNCOAT. If you are NK'd, you will become mafia. You will join the mafia PM. You win with the town if not NK'd.

[Hidden Flavor: You are Naive. Your role does nothing.]

Lannan (XLAV) - You are a HARPY. Harpies steal food from their victims as they eat, thus preventing them from ever eating. Since you are a thief, you are the ROLE STEALER. Once per game, you may select a player and permanently steal their role. You will render your victim VANILLA. If you target mafia, there is a 50% chance you will die. You win with the town.

[Hidden Flavor: You are Brutal. When you role steal someone, you will roleblock them that night]

[Mod-Note: Became JOAT after role stealing Smither's role]

Trekie (1) (Breaking) - You are a LOOGAROO. By day, you disguise yourself as a normal human being, hiding your true self with the outer skin of a dead human. Every night, you go into the house of an unsuspecting victim, drink their blood, and, in some cases, steal their now-lifeless body. Because you change skins so often, you are the JOAT. You have the following 1-shot abilities: Ascetic, Motivator, and Watcher. As the ascetic, you may make yourself unaffected by nonlethal actions during a NP. As a motivator, you may give an X-shot role an extra shot, or give a role not restricted by shots a chance to user their roles twice in one night. You may not self-motivate. As watcher, you may select a player, and learn who, if anyone, visits them. You win with the town.

Coca - You are a BOGGART. You pick a family and spend your life with them--pestering, harassing, and even terrorizing them. Any attempt they make to flee to a different, Boggart-free, house will be futile, as you will relentlessly track them to their new residence. You are the TRACKER. Each night you may select a player and you will learn who they visit. You win with the town.

Saph - You are a WEREWOLF. You recognize and are attracted to the calls of other werewolves. Because you can recognize other dangerous beasts like you, and because you flock to them, you are the GUNSMITH. You may select a player and learn if they are armed. Roles with that are armed include: Cop, Bomb, Vigilante, Serial Killer, FBI Agent, Gunsmith, or a JOAT with any of these abilities. Also, all mafia are armed, though a Godfather will not appear armed to your investigation. You win with the town.

HPG - You are a BANSHEE. You are a harbinger of death; in other words, you are a cliched and oft-recycled line in mythology. It's rather pitiful. You are nothing special, so you're VANILLA. You have no role. You win with the town.

Cobalt (1) - You are a GREMLIN. You specialize in causing chaos and mischief. Thus, you are the even-night RANDOMIZER. You may select a player each even night, and randomize their action's target (if they have and action and use it). You win with the town.

FT/Budda - You are a JOTUNN. Almost equal to the Aseir in power, you are able to assert yourself against them if necessary. Due to your ability to stand up to those who would subjugate you, you are the 3-shot DOCTOR. You protect your own. You may select a player and protect them from death that night. You win with the town.

THIRD-PARTY

Voice - You are the GRENDEL. Every night you go into Hrothgar's Mead Hall and murder some of his men. Due to your penchant for violence, you are the 2-shot VIGILANTE. At night, you may select a player for death.

[Mod-Note: Mod-killed and converted to TP]

MOD COMMENTS

A Note on Balance

Some scenarios were extremely unlikely, from my perspective while creating the game. Chief among those unlikely scenarios were the doctor protecting the killer on the same night they targeted the bomb and the rolestealer dying from targeting mafia. While remotely possible, I didn't think that they'd swing the game either way--and, sure enough, they didn't. If we discount these possibilities, town had 3 mislynches to secure a win with (13-4, 10-4, 7-4, 5-4). Mafia's control of it's own NK was hampered by the random flavor, which I felt weakened mafia. All power roles could be countered somehow (Doc - Strng., Gnsm. - Gdf., Trk. - Ninja, etc.). All in all, while I think the game was slightly skewed towards mafia, I think it was fairly balanced.

A Note on the Game

There were quite a few "WTF" moments in this game. YYW's hammering Forever was absolutely incredible...in a bad way. It made little strategic sense and was utterly careless. Ironically, Space doing the exact same to YYW was equally "WTF," though it still worked out for town. Neither Space nor YYW bothered to read the DP when they hammered, and I think this kind of carelessness permeated the game during the middle stretch. Towards the end, it was inactivity that plagued the game, but that is to be expected as player numbers dwindle. The first DP, though, was, I thought, excellent.

The last DP was interesting. Town could've basically won by lynching Dalt or Vaar. Had Dalt been lynched, town would've eliminated the mafia. This would've won them the game. Had Vaar been lynched, Dalt couldn't have NK'd anyone for the rest of the game (Trekie was BP, Cobalt was Bomb) without either dying himself or having his NK blocked. This, while not a win (since Dalt could've secured a mislynch, and a tie = mafia win), this would've basically been a win for town, since Dalt probably would've tried to NK Cobalt.

I also don't really understand why people chose to lynch that last DP. You were at MYLO, not LYLO. Town could've held off, and Dalt probably would've NK'd someone (either Vaar or Cobalt--giving Dalt a 50% chance of hitting scum). Cobalt's decision to vote therefore astounded me, because he was in a position to know this, as the Bomb himself. Why not winnow down the field and heighten the chance of a quick town win?

I thought Vaar's analysis on Dalt was quite accurate, but I think Vaar just lost some confidence and took the quick way out. You guys should've done more probing and investigating and questioning in that final DP. By any normal assessment, town should've won this game. But they seemed to hand mafia the win in the final seconds. It was intriguing to see unfold.

That said, Dalt did a good job keeping mafia running this game, and his waiving the NK DP7 was a smart choice for his plan. So, I commend him on his efforts. Trekie also kept plugging away, and had some insightful analysis that behooved town.

Anyway, it was a good game.

TL;DR

Good game! Congrats to mafia on their solid win! Hoped you all liked the game, whether you played for a few hours or all 8 DPs! Feel free to post now...

ADDENDUM

For the record, this game was also known as "Magical Creatures Mafia," but the "Mythological Creatures Mafia" is correct.

================

Also, Vaar says to post this:

"In accordance to Vaarkarian code, an small note, along with an illustration, shall be presented upon end game, typically by the natives. This game's choice was our joyous Vaarka, whom wished for this end game's title picture to be the following: http://cdn.meme.am... "

ADDENDUM 2

The theme, also for the record, was good/nice/likeable/respect creatures vs. bad/naughty/unlikeable/disrepected creatures. There was, interestingly enough, very little theme analysis in this game.

I disagree, generally, with bsh1's analysis of the game... but w/e.

This game was won, though, because of Dalton's exceptional skills as a mafioso.

I could have played better for sure, but I did put a lot of thought into how I wrote those posts in that last DP, and some of my inactivity WAS strategic in the earlier game. Maybe I oversell myself, but I'd like to think I'm not a horrible mafioso, at least.

Trekie did do great though, I congratulate her for that. :)
I was waiting so long for you to role claim, Trekie, because I was planning on claiming BP no matter what, lol.

My thoughts on the viability of that NL was that Vaarka would be killed and we'd be in the exact same position, minus Vaarka, with the actual BP being unable to die and the maf being unwilling to NK me. I suppose it would have been better to wait a few DP to see if maf would lynch me, then go with my reads (which still would have been incorrect.) In my head, it was basically a "force a draw or risk it all" scenario.

That being said, I feel absolutely terrible. It wasn't obvious to me that Dalt was maf and I even read him as more town than Trek after rereading everything. I clearly have a lot of room for improvement. Good job Dalt, well played. And good job to everyone else.

Especially thank you bsh1. It was a cleanly run game and you did an excellent job of replacing inactives.

Yeah, I mean, before the CC, my extremely slight paranoia about him only came from one post on DP6 where his frustration felt fake about the previous no-lynch and the fact that he seemed too pro-town and insightful in some cases. But I clearly didn't feel too strongly about that.

You shouldn't. You were very contributive and played well :P

Rereading your analysis, I specifically tried to avoid making posts where I linked to myself and argued analytically/defensively, because that (to my experience) tends to come off as overt scumminess. Rather, I tried to mimic genuine, emotionalized town frustration, and tried to entice you to do the analysis yourself. The goal of my posts was to subliminally sway you in particular into going back and rereading my posts, and to notice on your own how pro-town I played without too much of my direct encouragement. And I did play pro-town; it's not like you were wrong.

I had also been setting myself up for a BP claim though and had also practically since the forever hammer, setting myself up for a long bussing game in order to accumulate as much town cred as possible going into LYLO/MYLO.

This. If I had to choose between having a smart enemy and not having a smart ally, I think I'd choose the latter.

Also, just to point out how long this game dragged on:
The day I received my PM stating my character and role: 1/4/16 (January 4th, 2016 for you people who will actually question whether or not I mean January 4th or April 1st).

The day DP8 ended and I received the endgame link: 2/2/16 (February 2nd, 2016).

I apologize to both bsh, and the other players who died early and had to sit there, watching the past few DPs go by with the draining activity, especially 7-8.
