Game Theory II Mafia

Overview

This is a custom themed game, with a major special mechanic, no intentionally game-breaking procedures, and some custom made roles.

This is a second iteration of the first Game Theory Mafia ( http://www.debate.org... ). Minor enhancements to the mechanic were made, roles, mini-games, and relevant changes were made.

Mafia declaration speech: this game follows the Bullish Standard Modding Practices. No cults, no hidden flavors, no bastard modding, etc. If you don't have a win con, that means you're town. Mafia knows town PM structure. There may be obscure/hand-crafted roles. Theme: Game Theory II. More info: http://www.debate.org...

NOTE: Clause 7 of the Modding Rules NO LONGER APPLIES. You are no longer required to unvote prior to voting again; however, you are still encouraged for my convenience.

Game

Game Theory is an interdisciplinary academic field of study. Specifically, it studies strategic decision making, with more complex cases involving more than one rational influence on payoffs. Terms to know about game theoretical decision making include: player, decision, information, payoffs, perfect rationality, and superrationality.

Wikipedia on Game Theory: http://en.wikipedia.org...
Games of Game Theory: http://en.wikipedia.org...
The classic game, Prisoner's dilemma: http://en.wikipedia.org...

Mafia is usually described as a game of the uninformed majority versus the informed minority. The theme of this mafia game will also involve the DIVIDED majority versus the UNITED minority. As such, each member of the town has 2 possible conditions on which to win: eliminate the mafia, OR, surviving until the mafia makes up half of the living.

In addition to the main game, mini decision-games will be presented each phase cycle. These games will mainly revolve around the choice of cooperation or self-preservation by the town, with cooperation yielding rewards for the entire town, and self-interest yielding rewards for the individual and be potentially devastating to everyone else. Example scenario:

Each town member must make a decision. He may choose to use his role, or forfeit his action. If the majority of town members DO NOT use their actions, then all town who do use their action will be BP for that NP. If, however, a majority of town DOES use their action, then those who did not use their roles will be vanillarized.

This scenario is obviously not sound for balance reasons. But it is reflective of the types of games that will be given. All scenarios are prewritten except for theme flavoring. That is, the events of the game have no effect on what the games are. The default position if no response is given is "negative". Discussion may or may not be allowed. The mafia may or may not be involved in certain games.

There is no third party.

Sample PM:

[Title] Game Theory Mafia - player [it literally says "player," not the player's name]

[Username] - Welcome, player. Each night, you will be able to make decisions that impact yourself and the game.

- You are the innocent child; on DP3, you will be mod-confirmed as innocent.

You win with the town; OR, you win if you are still alive when the mafia makes up half of the living players.

[Role description may be absent if it is common, such as cop.]

========

Looking for 13~17 players. Having 13+ players is absolutely necessary for the game to maintain balance. The game will start if it reaches 13 players within one week; if at any time after one week 13 players have signed up, the game will start. If 13 players are not reached after two weeks, then the game is cancelled and I will put myself on the "on hold" list. Have a good game.

I'm very, very, very tempted to sign up. To say that I love game theory is an understatement. This is right up my alley.

Then again... it's a bit of a prisoner's dilemma: participating will drain a bunch of my time, which might put me on the sh1tty end of the real-analysis curve such that my payoff will bloody disintegrate.

(Who am I kidding? RA isn't graded on a curve... I'm fcked.)

Ehhh, if I had more time this would be an easy choice, lol...

I can totally see Bullish throwing in some extra bastard mechanics just to reaffirm his dominance. The sheer amount of time I would waste on thematic analysis alone... bleh, I'd flunk everything, lol -- and then I'd get policy lynched for being wrong.

/in, sounds interesting.

Is there any way I could play along with another person as a single player?

If you mean like a hydra, I generally don't like to have hydras in my games, but I will allow them on a case by case basis.

Yeah, that's what I mean -- I want a hydra because I'll go inactive for around 16 hours a day due to school and sleep, and while you don't miss much in a Beginners' Mafia game, you do in normal mafia; so hydra-ing would help activity levels.
