New study shows that it shrinks your frontal cortex. It's as bad for you as substance abuse.

I do not have an addictive personality at all.

The health forum here clearly cures internet addiction.

I scored a 57. I too have a bit of a problem. Even my waking up abruptly to get a drink of water results in a four-hour Facebook spree before going back to bed...

I think this only applies to certain types of websites, for instance FB and Twitter are probably tied for 2nd worst, after pornography (seriously.) The "sound"-byte/jpeg style of those sites make you jump all over the place, and essentially "train" your brain into ADD, and in certain cases addiction. With FB and Twitter, maybe you get addicted to validation, with porn, well maybe that's obvious, but it has a lot to do with something called the Coolidge Effect. Those online games such as the ones played on social-networking sites probably have similar effects.

Hopefully here we balance out our jumping from forum to forum with in-depth debates. That could be wishful thinking though. lol

Also any addiction would have those effects, such as food, sex, or for some people certain types of obscure stimulation (you can see them on T.V.) It's all about reinforcing one particular dopamine pathway at the expense of desensitizing the rest.

Ohhh, I don't know how I feel about this.

You know me... I want to know the neuroscience behind it and shiit.

So, I went looking into it, and found this article out of the DailyMail:

Internet addiction disrupts nerve wiring in the brains of teenagers, a study has found - causing a level of brain damage normally seen in heavy substance abusers.

Similar effects have been seen in the brains of people exposed to alcohol, cocaine and cannabis.

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk...

Uhhhh... lol, my brain should be melting out of my head by now.

Besides, that article indicates that it's white connective neurological tissue that's harmed, while the initial article posted by the OP claimed it was grey matter from the cerebral cortex.

Soooooo, I went digging deeper...

And, guess what! I'm pretty sure I found the Chinese study everyone's talking about! ^_^

http://www.cnsspectrums.com...

Here's what they conclude:

"Internet game overuse is an emerging disorder and features diminished impulse control and poor reward-processing."

Lol, no, it doesn't cause brain damage. It just alters how your brain operates, and quite reversibly.

Here's their full conclusion:

"Internet game overuse may be associated with abnormal neurobiological mechanisms in the orbitofrontal cortex, striatum, and sensory regions, which are implicated in impulse control, reward processing, and somatic representation of previous experiences. Our results support the idea that Internet game overuse shares psychological and neural mechanisms with other types of impulse control disorders and substance/non-substance-related addiction"

Lol, so yeah, it's just more propaganda for that asss. Lol, apparently, TV does the same thing:

"No one really thought seriously about TV addiction until recently, when a research found the characteristic behavior of persons addicted to drugs and to TV is the same."

Lolol.

So, if you watch TV, play videogames, surf the net, and smoke pot, you're pretty much going to end up catatonic by next week. xD
