This is a table of the medal count from the 2012 (summer) Olympics which concluded today compared to the medal count from the 2008 Olympics

(country, number of gold, number of silver, number of bronze, total)

2012:
USA - 46 - 29 - 29 - 104
China - 38 - 27 - 22 - 87
Russia 24 - 25 - 33 - 82
Great Britain - 29 - 17 - 19 - 65
Germany - 11 - 19 - 14 - 44
Japan - 7 - 14 - 17 - 38
Australia - 7 - 16 - 12 - 35
France - 11 - 11 - 12 - 34
South Korea - 13 - 8 - 7 - 28
Italy - 8 - 9 - 11 - 28

2008:
US - 36 - 38 - 36 - 110
China - 51 - 21 - 28 - 100
Russia - 23 - 21 - 29 - 73
Great Britain - 19 - 13 - 15 - 47
Australia - 14 - 14 - 17 - 45
France - 7 - 16 - 18 - 41
Germany - 16 - 10 - 15 - 41
South Korea - 13 - 9 - 8 - 30
Ukraine - 7 - 5 - 15 - 27
Italy - 8 - 9 - 10 - 27

Summary:
1) US declined a bit but cashed in on Gold Medals this time
2) China slipped a lot (more than any other top 10 nation) and lost quite a bit of gold and Bronze (made more in Silver)
3) Great Britain saw a huge improvement in number of medals earned
4) Top 4 nations from 2008 stayed in the same position
5) Of the top 10 nations in 2008, 9 stayed in the top 10, Ukraine dropped out and Japan stepped in
6) Italy changed the least, only one extra Bronze from 2008

Thought it was interesting :D

So is there some overall grade each country gets, or some way in which one country is officially recognized as the greatest? USA seemed to clean up this time, but in '08 China seemed to get many more golds despite coming slightly behind in total. Was China argued to have won in '08? I'm used to watching football which is winner-take-all so I'm a little confused as to how to interpret all this...
Beliefs in a nutshell:
- The Ends never justify the Means.
- Objectivity is secondary to subjectivity.
- The War on Drugs is the worst policy in the U.S.
- Most people worship technology as a religion.
- Computers will never become sentient.

I think the most of it was to be expected. The only thing that came as a remote surprise was Great Britain doing so well, but even that can be explained once you factor in home field advantage, playing under the cheering eye of the Queen herself.

Certainly interesting, just not all that surprising.

I read somewhere that the host country always sees about a 50% boost in medals earned then they otherwise would have earned. That might explain their performance

Basically, the US clearly won the Olympics this time.

This is interesting data... Looks like the UK did better this year than in '08 also..

How is NK not in the top 10?

"ABC reported on Thursday that the state offers a carrot-and-stick approach to the Olympic Games; athletes can look forward to refrigerators, cars, and televisions when they win, and labor camp when they lose."

Most people considered China as winning the last olympics.
