You are thrown back in history by say 300 years. You can name the geography. You need to make a living, and can introduce some sort of invention that you are just taking from modern life, what would you produce/sell? Keep in mind it can only be created by the industry and technology of the time - no electricity to speak of, limitations of the local craftsman etc.

Hmmm... The UK. I would invent The Beatles.

The alternating current transformer.

Kickstart human advancement and establish a ridiculously powerful legacy.

I imagine a genius like Tesla could only build upon it, rather than lament that he didn't come up with it first.

In fact, I'm pretty sure he chose not to profit from any of his ideas, believing that his discoveries were gifts to man.

He was right, and I'd be hard pressed not to follow in his footsteps.

I would also add that you can only invent based on the knowledge you have. You can't go look up how exactly to make something in the future.

I would probably invent the combustion engine, the light bulb, the battery, the Tesla coil, various types of machinery, toilets and indoor plumbing, photography, and I would get involved in banking.

The firearm what else. It makes everyone equal. The greatest thing ever invented to improve life for everyone. Without the invention of firearms everyone would be slaves and indentured servants, which would make all other inventions pointless to the masses, as they would not have access to them nor would they have the inclination to invent anything. Only the elite would have such an inclination to invent anything and we all know how stupid they are. They would just invent things to kill people. Not improve living standards.

Don't see why I wouldn't invent communism in the UK, have a massive orgy of literature. Mostly because being known as a father of Conservatism (One Nation Toryism), liberalism, anarchism, fascism, nationalism, feminism, socialism, communism, and libertarianism appeals to me, but also the fact that I have no scientific breakthrough to contribute...

Are you seriously suggesting that you could, based on knowledge from the top of your head, build a Tesla coil?

I'm also quite curious as to how you would utilize the small-scale blacksmithing capabilities and crude tools existant back then to build an internal combustion engine.

You wouldn't mind providing details, would you?

I'd write every Stephen King novel (provided I could edit them enough to fit in with the era).

I would bring back plans of a steel manufactory to Philadelphia, and give it to whomever the brightest engineer was at the time. You don't necessarily need electricity to make steel either, it helps, but it's not imperative. I assume I can also bring back all the knowledge I already have, and perhaps some papers, whereupon I'd build steam engines with my steel in time.

You guys fail miserably. Most of what you have proposed requires things that would not be readily available to you, or components that are not available, nor would you have a clue as to how to do it. How can you make a combustion engine without some refined fuel? How can you make a light bulb when there is no source of electricity? Fail fail fail.

Bench is the only one that made something that fits the OP, and it was a friggen hamburger.

Do you realize it would be kind of hard to build a death star WITHOUT ELECTRICITY?

I actually have spent a fair amount of my life lost in thought about traveling back in time and introducing modern knowledge to ancient folks.

I think the greatest advantage I'd have, provided I couldn't bring any actual technology back in time with me, would be my knowledge of physics. I could walk into any pre-Newtonian University (so maybe 16th century England, perhaps) and challenge them that a small object would fall as fast as a large object. They would laugh me away and then I'd shock them with the experiment. From there I could explain the heavens to them, relativity and quantum mechanics, geology, evolution, genetics... I would do nothing but dazzle the intellectual class with my knowledge of science. Then I'd make a guitar and invent Rock'n'Roll.

I figure this life would last about two days before the church has me killed.
Beliefs in a nutshell:
- The Ends never justify the Means.
- Objectivity is secondary to subjectivity.
- The War on Drugs is the worst policy in the U.S.
- Most people worship technology as a religion.
- Computers will never become sentient.

A binomial system of taxonomic nomenclature. And I would JUST have enough time to beat little five-year old Carl Linnaeus to it too. I'd like to say that I could bring back something more substantial, but unless I could either prepare and study or bring back written materials there wouldn't be much that I could do off of the top of my head. I would revolutionize the hell out of botany, though. Thousands upon thousands of herbarium sheets would bear my florid signature... *cue diabolical laughter*
"The Collectivist experiment is thoroughly suited (in appearance at least) to the Capitalist society which it proposes to replace. It works with the existing machinery of Capitalism, talks and thinks in the existing terms of Capitalism, appeals to just those appetites which Capitalism has aroused, and ridicules as fantastic and unheard-of just those things in society the memory of which Capitalism has killed among men wherever the blight of it has spread."

I think a bicycle is doable, and it could change a lot. Probably the most difficult part for a craftsman would be the chain, and also figuring out breaks without rubber, but still doable. It would be in many ways more accessable than a horse, and would be the most efficient form of transportation. I can even imagine an army using bicycles in outflanking an enemy.

Uhhh. All I'd need is two bits of copper wire and a piece of iron with a hole in it.

For an energy source, all I'd need a crank that rubs together two disks of steel inside a saline solution. Entirely doable. There wasn't much more at the disposal of scientists when electricity and AC conductors were invented. :\

I know, I know. To hell with me, I don't know anything. >.>
