What is the origin of Flower of Life symbol?

I have been collecting resources and tracing the history of the Flower of Life geometrical symbol, since it contains great properties of many kinds:

While the oldest occurence in Abydos, Egypt has been questioned, I was long thinking Iran/Iraq has the oldest examples of the motif, but then I hit on this online Metropolitan museum of Art artifact page:

which shows a wooden box dating 1500BC and having a second degree Flower of Life symbol on the lid. Beaker from Marlik, Iran is not much younger (1400-1100BC):

My questions are, how did such a symbol develop, what kind of tools they needed to construct this on metal and wood work, what was the basic ideology, maybe religious meaning behind the motif, mathematic understading it requires to construct the symbol and did they have a name for it?
