Arguably one of the most cosmopolitan and expansive Chinese dynasties. The Tang saw one of China's first large scale expansion into the West, going as far as modern day Kyrgyzstan. Expansion to the west slowed with the Battle of Talas, the first military encounter between the Muslim world and China. Later effects saw the usage of paper making it's way through the Near East and Western Asia.
Later dynasties had not expanded expanded west nearly as far as the Tang, with the only exceptions of the Yuan and Qing, both being dynasties lead by foreign powers.
One of it's most distinct characteristics were also a large cause in it's collapse. Too much power being given to regional generals allowed for devastating civil wars (the An Lushan revolt most notable) to bleed the country dry. As well as territory that had been spread to far thin.
