The Eurasian/Central Asian/Middle Eastern region has always consisted of yuuge, sparsely populated swathes of land. This land has, up until the modern era, generally been dominated by a series of great empires rather than being balkanised like Europe has been traditionally.
One of these empires was the Rashidun Caliphate, established by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It conquered a yuuge area and the inhabitants of these lands were converted to a single religious-political system known as Islam. The soldiers of this empire were known for their extreme religious fervour and strong desire to spread the boundaries of Islam.
Fast forward a thousand years. The Soviet Union was founded upon the political system known as Communism. Though atheistic, many Communist revolutionaries took their ideology so seriously that they more or less treated it like a religion. Religious martyrdom was replaced by martyrdom for the cause of communism, and the revolutionary replaced the Jihadist/Crusader. The Soviets conquered a vast, sparsely populated land area in that Eursian region and forced its inhabitants to "convert" to the system of communism.
Do you think this is a valid comparison or not?
