I'd like to learn French.
Can anyone give advice on the best way to learn a new language (enough that I could communicate with people who speak it exclusively).

Please don't say "go to the country". I mean apart from that. :P

I'd love to learn Italian, but I wasn't sure of its prospects. I know just a few words of it though:
Attraversiamo (I love the sound of the word)
Vaffanculo
Stronzo

I have heard that Italian is soothing, Do you find it soothing?

I think I'd learn French first, then Italian, and then Spanish.

Stop applying to fastfood and KFC. I work for a company that does business with some mexican companies and all of the mexican companies that we do business with have an English department.

Though I would like to learn German or Russian, personally.

Once you have a certian level of understanding (like a basic understanding of knowing verbs and nouns, but not quite ready to put them together in sentences to communicate), I've found that putting on a movie that you know by heart and putting it in the new language has been very helpful (I use Shrek, because I know it line for line).

Man, I wanted to learn Russian because it's original. Now everyone wants to learn Russian? I feel like someone raped my mind and now know all my thoughts and plans.

I want to learn Russian or German simply because of the history they have with physics.

You'll never retain Russian long term because you'll never use it. IT's also a bitch to learn with Cyrillic, it's just not worth the massive effort.

I'd like to keep improving my Spanish, i actually have lots of occasion to speak it, and all those years of Latin have helped in Spanish.

or as Winston Churchill said: "I shall learn no language until i have mastered my own."

Also, OreEle, German is super easy to learn for native English speakers, also being a Germanic language. Willst du Deutsch lernen, ja?

It's a shame that foreign languages are no longer compulsory at school (although, if I were still a child I'd probably disagree with that statement).

From the age of 7 we were taught French for one hour every day and at the age of 12 we had to take a second language: in my school we could choose either German or Latin, so I took German because I realised I was never going to be a doctor or a scholar.

These days, I use both these languages on a daily basis to communicate with suppliers abroad and they also come in really handy on business trips, so now I know all the countless hours spent learning grammar and vocab for homework were worth it.

Well I hope so.

I'm reading this as "will the dutch learn, yes?" lol

I should point out, I want to learn German or Russian (I'd like both actually), but I haven't yet started either. My HS only offered French and Spanish.

lmao. At least you got the learn part correct. Lernen=learn and ja=yes.

My highschool had French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.
