I am the only qualified candidate for captain of my debate team, but. I still have to write a speech telling what the debate captain does and why I am most qualified.
What exactly does a debate captain do besides act as a figurehead? Does anyone have any suggestions? I definitely would appreciate it.

I didn't do debate at school either but I suppose the captain is the one that organises the whole caboodle and takes the credit for successes and the blame for losses...

The captain will keep the team focused and organized. Much would depend on how your teams are working debates. You might delegate certain topics of specialization and match up people.

If the captain is decided by vote, you need to realize that nothing you say or write will make a difference but rather the number of friends you have on the team. If the debate team votes for their captain, you can relax. It has already been decided.

You need to coordinate the team using your power. Coordinate
-Research
-Speeches
-Feedback

by establishing due dates for planned speeches and research on topics you force debate members to stay on task and put pressure on them.

By giving them relevant and constructive feedback, you give them the confidence they need to fix their speeches etc etc.
