I was in a London pub last night having a slightly heated discussion about racism with a journalist acquaintance of mine who writes for a right-wing British tabloid newspaper. Our conversation didn't go unnoticed.

When I went outside for a smoke, three thugs followed me, though I was unaware of this at the time. They took me totally by surprise and I was glassed over the back of the head and received numerous blows to my face before I managed to gather my wits about me enough to mount any sort of defence. Nevertheless, they were big lads and it was clear I was always going to come out second best so I dashed back inside hoping for a bit of support.

Sadly, none was forthcoming and the assault continued until one of the attackers said that they'd better scarper before the filth arrived.

However, before they left they took the opportunity to call me a "Paki-lover" and inform me of their intention to "finish me off" the next time they saw me.

As a result of this incident I had to receive emergency medical treatment and, as a consequence, I went to my first meeting this morning (having discharged myself from hospital against the doctors' advice) so covered in bandages that I looked like a half-unravelled Egyptian mummy dressed in a business suit! (I lied to my client and said I'd been in a car crash, by the way).

The police investigated and took witness statements as well as the CCTV footage from in and outside the pub but, frankly, they have much bigger fish to fry and I don't expect them to spend too much time on the matter since my injuries are only superficial.

The reason I am telling you this is that earlier in the day an activist from the Socialist Workers Party invited me to join a "demonstration" against the fascist British National Party's "Red, White and Blue Festival" on the 15th August in Derbyshire, England, in order to "disrupt" the occasion. There will be hundreds, if not thousands, of socialists and anti-fascists coming from all over the country and I know from experience that it will end in violence. I refused the invitation because I believe in free speech, no matter how abhorrent that speech may be, and also because I'm getting too old to keep on fighting all the time.

However, in the light of the hammering I received at the hands of those racist thugs last night, I'm inclined to think I should attend after all.

What do you think?

Ouch, Brian. You're lucky you only escaped with a few minor scrapes.

Personally, I would only go to such an event if the organizers promised to keep it non-violent, or at least tried their best to keep it non-violent.

The only reason for you to go now would be to protest against the use of violence as a means of getting a point across - not that you're protesting against the fascists. As you stated, you believe in free speech no matter how abhorrent that speech is. Well, guess what that demonstration is intended to fight against, possibly through violent means.

Violence is what was committed against you, and there is no point going to support more violence.

Thank you for those wise words, Volkov, I think you're right. Anyway, I really don't feel like fighting anybody right now!

Free speech? You? I am pleasantly surprised, and hope it didn't result from punch drunkenness.
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.

No pun intended, eh? It's half past midnight here and I'm writing this on my way home on an overland train from the Midlands but I'm not going to insult your intelligence by pretending I haven't had a drink. I've had a few, but I just feel sleepy, not aggressive!

Oh, and I've got a sore head, nose and cheek, but never mind!

If you go, take a tazer. If you can't get one then just sit at home and watch it on television while eating popcorn and being glad you weren't there. We Oklahomans prefer the latter but I'd fight if my views were in question and my dignity at stake. We don't like trash talkers here.

Want some headache and bruise tips? just ask.
In the relationship between Obama and the rest of the U.S..... I think the U.S. is getting the short end of the hockey stick.

Wow I feel for you Brian but don't let these pathetic racist bullies undermine your confidence.
You stood up for yourself and your opinions against three violent thugs and came through in one piece .

F*ck dem.

Go to the rally if you want, chill if you want.

Happily.

I'm not really a heavy drinker (a bit of a lightweight really) and I wasn't too hammered to spell last night but I often add that to internet comments if I do go online after a session. Just in case I say anything particularly thoughtless, stupid or potentially offensive.
Thanks for your concern for my non-existent credibility on this site though. lol

@ Brian: Are you gonna tell the old bill about this?

Thankfully Brian didn't get House. House would have kept him in for a week looking for tumors and HIV.

Anyway, lucky you only got a few scrapes and bruises. Always try and carry some sort of defence around (E.G. Mace, tazer, 50 calibre machine gun).

Were they right with there paki-lover sentiment? You do like other........races.

DATCMOTO's hiotmen got to ya did they?

Thanks for all your support guys, it really means a lot to me.

DATCMOTO lives in Devon which is famous for thatched cottages and clotted-cream teas - there's no such thing as a hitman from Devon!

As regards martial arts, I have been studying off and on since I was 7 years old which is why I was not badly hurt.

The police are investigating but because my injuries were not serious I don't expect they will make it a priority.

Still, I do feel that it is important to speak up for what you believe in, regardless of the consequences.
