"The Bell Curve" by Hernstein and Murray is an excellent book. Everyone with a serious interest in public affairs should consider it required reading. Hernstein dies before the book appeared, but Charles Murray has produced a series of carefully argued books. Murray's short book, Real Education: Four Simple Truths for Bringing America's Schools Back to Reality, is also excellent.
