As you may know, in December many wealthy people from across America and beyond visit New York to do their Christmas shopping (are there no shops where they live?) and, at this time of year, the city's hotels collectively rub their hands together, lick their lips and hike up their rates in greedy anticipation of their annual windfall of prosperous present-purchasing patrons.

Please see reproduced hereunder the result of a search I did for a hotel in Manhattan for 1st December, 2 nights (rates per night excluding tax based on a standard room) which clearly illustrates rampant capitalism at its most obscene:

FOUR SEASONS NEW YORK - 1150.00USD
THE SURREY - 1020.00USD
THE PENINSULA NEW YORK - 1095.00USD
YOTEL NEW YORK - 449.00USD
HOWARD JOHNSON MANHATTAN SOHO - 259.00USD
THE HUDSON - 399.00USD
NOVOTEL NEW YORK TIMES SQUARE - 338.80USD
THE PIERRE NEW YORK - 895.00USD
LE PARKER MERIDIEN NEW YORK - 449.00USD
WESTIN NEW YORK TIMES SQUARE - 399.10USD
THE WALDORF ASTORIA - 659.00USD
MORGANS - 449.00USD
SOHO GRAND HOTEL - 529.00USD
THE MARK - 825.00USD

Okay, some of those hotels are quite posh, but still...

Whats your point? Thats 4-5 star hotels, with great service, food, rooms, ect. overcharge? Well, if they overcharge, then how the hell are they still in business?

Normally those hotels would be charging between $150-$300 per night - they are not over-charging, just taking advantage of the increased demand by ratcheting their prices up to sky-high levels.

I'm not saying it's illegal, I'm just saying it's capitalism, and capitalism can be a bit annoying if you want to visit New York for reasons other than Christmas shopping.

It would be more annoying if you wanted a room really badly and some socialist putz took your spot for 100 dollars.

I assume you want to visit NYC for Christmas?

Well, anyways, I see why it annoys you, but it's business. I mean, they clearly make A LOT of money off of it, or else they would never be able to sell those for that much higher.

At least with capitalism, you can pick other good hotels for very reasonable prices.

In New Jersey, maybe, but not Manhattan!

I won't be able to afford many things ever most likely, does that mean I should automatically criminalize anything that is raised in price because of demand?

you're singing praise of capitalism while it's raping you. differences in wealth are by no means accounted for by honest individual productivity, that's delusion. consider the man hours put in by the likes of bill gates as opposed to your average labourer. he knows it, that's why he gave away so much of his money. what demand is there that he be so privileged? your honest labourer is being played for a fool, he who is the driving force behind the generation of wealth for those lucky few elevated by our current and corrupt means of operation.

inb4 incentivising. dumb.
