"Pyathagorean" Theorem

Why do people who never invented certain concepts get credit for their inventions? Sumerians used the "Pythagorean" theorem 1200 years before the Greek mathematician was born . . .

We learned about Pyrthagorean first. Would be annoying to rename it just to be "fair." Plus, it's easier to name it after someone rather than name it after an unknown inventor.

But didn't Pythagora actually prove it, while those before him just found it out and used it? It's not the same.

I think it will have something to do with formal proof. You can invent theorem, but you may not be able to convince others that the theorem is correct.
