"I feel a sense of clarity when death is accepted, and life begins -- a life focused, a life worth living."
"In case anyone hasn't noticed it, the West is in extremis. The undertaker is checking his watch at the foot of its bed, and there's a sinister kettle of croaking, money-feathered vultures on the roof."

Some Japanese companies send their young employees to this ceremony in which they pretend that they are going to die soon. They write out a list of their regrets and accomplishments, and they also write a personal letter to their loved ones. Then they enter a coffin where a few minutes of silence is imbibed. People emerge feeling the cathartic experience your quote describes.

I was just discussing with someone today about a study I had read that had found that people who think about death more often report being happier.

The theory behind this being that people who think about death tend to be more at peace with the idea.

With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.

By far one of my favorite quote.
