I wondered this about a year ago but came to the conclusion that there aren't any.

There is one other cool mafia site though (mafiascum) but DDO mafia is faster and more energetic so I prefer it although there are a few concepts and styles from mafiascum that can be useful in any scenario.

There are other intellectual websites, and ones with discussions and intelligent members, but the format is different. Many websites aren't focused on instigating discussion - think very good blogs with intelligent replies. Some don't have a large discussion aspect as comments are sparse. Furthermore, many intellectual websites don't necessarily have a political or economical bent, despite being highly intellectual. A few:

http://zhaolearning.com... - educational reform discussions; not so many commenters

https://www.coursera.org... - Some of the courses have quite decent discussions; my Introduction to Philosophy course had decent forum comments; you have to enroll to access related discussion threads obviously

http://www.artofmanliness.com... - the name and front page may throw you off; don't let it. While this is away from politics and economics (on a societal level) , it has many solid discussions. This series and the associated discussions are simply sublime http://www.artofmanliness.com...

http://lesswrong.com... - Very wide array of discussed content, quite intelligent discussions; one of my top tips (Kinesis recommended it as well)

Of course, many great websites aren't based around discussions - many good blogs exist if you look hard enough. Discussions about personal productivity and the like are good, even if not what you're looking for. I can list a few, should you show interest.

That's the tip of the iceberg.

One of my friends has a drinking game with chat roulette. Every time she sees a penis, she drinks. She's usually wasted in less than fifteen minutes. It is my understanding that girls who do go on chat roulette, do so for this reason.

Civfanatics has some very good posters in the off-topic section. Many of them are very educated: http://forums.civfanatics.com...

They are mainly liberals, but this site has a huge libertarian bias, so you don't have much of a right to complain.

In my opinion, you can find the smartest people on the internet on DDO.

In unrelated news, I'm a juggle spokesperson now.

Congrats, and I'm inclined to agree to a general extent. I also really like the personalities of most of the people on here, which are refreshing in many ways.

This isn't a discussion website in the slightest, but it's a good resource for Japanese culture, politics and economics among others http://www.nippon.com... . There's some interesting feature series as well, if you like Japanese history.

On rare occasions the comments sections of major newspapers are alright. Note the word 'rare' though. On a sidenote, I'd recommend reading Ross Gittins on the Sydney Morning Herald website - mixture of behavioural economics and other disciplines.

Does anybody have a good website on Chinese culture, society, politics and so forth?

You could have taken this two ways:

1. Wow, I'm counted amongst the smartest people Ryuu knows!

2. Wow, how can Ryuu possibly see all these idiots as the smartest on the internet?

I just made an account on Yahoo7 in order to answer some questions that had to be answered correctly for the fate of earth. On yahoo answers, nobody who answers questions in their entire community has a shred of common-sense and logic between them. I had 1 guy post an answer to my question on gaunilo's island saying LoL no, it doesn't work, go back to church. Sites like those are full of ad-hominems and useless, irrational talk. Nothing productive ever happens and there is no community spirit like here at DDO.
