Bad.

It clouds the judgement of those hiring with an unfair bias that could lead to decisions that aren't the best.

Basically, is nepotism a good or bad thing thing? If it is good, why? If it is bad, why?

Nepotism can be good in my opinion. There's a big problem today with labor laws that once you hire someone, you basically have to buy them off to make them go away if they're not doing they're job. It lowers productivity and robs the employer of money with little return. If you know who you're hiring, it makes the hiring process easier and more effective.

As for the habit of hiring some bum just because he's your son or brother, if you want to throw your money away like that, it's your money.
